Zurich

Coming back from Venice, we will be spending one night in Zurich at the ArabellaSheraton Neues Schloss. We will probably arrive the hotel around 8pm, and our flight out of Zurich is at 12pm the next day. Do you think we would be able to get any sites in at night?

You should be able to get some dinner and walk around the shopping district.

If you have a few minutes, take a look at Burt Wolf's Zurich commentary at burttravels.com. His Neumarkt suggestions appeal to me, but if you stroll the old streets between the bahnhofstrasse and the river, you should find some nice cafes and lovely corners. I don't know about evening hours. Keep topping and try to get Ursula's attention. J.

Most Swiss eat later than Americans. Dinner at 9:00 or 10:00 PM is not unheard of.

Here I am, donnabee!

From your hotel you can easily walk to the lakeside and take a stroll there - awesome with nice weather.

You can also walk over the Quai Bridge (Quaibruecke) towards the Niederdorf, where you'll find tons of small restaurants, bars, outdoor cafes. It will be very busy, especially on a nice summer evening.

If you should remain in the neighbourhood of the Bahnhofstrasse (main shopping street with branches of all famous labels such as Vuitton, Hermes, Gucci, Armani, etc.), don't miss the Muensterhofplatz (not sure, whether the church with the Chagall windows will be open at that time though), the Augustinergasse, the Storchengasse, Lindenhof, etc. All very charming small streets worth a stroll.

If you're looking for a typical place to eat (Swiss food), go to the Zeughauskeller at Paradeplatz. Very popular place. Can be noisy though.
Tada is right. We tend to have dinner late, especially in summer, but not as late as Spaniards, in general.

You'll find maps and city information at your hotel, where, by the way, I had lunch a couple of days ago. Their French restaurant 'Le Jardin' is good and quite popular, also with residents.

If you want something real quiet and classy, head for the gardens of the Baur au Lac Hotel. A real oasis for a glass of wine or champagne.

Shops and stores open only around 9 AM (boutiques usually around 10 AM), so unfortunately you won't have enough time for shopping the day you're leaving. Anyway, enjoy Zurich. It's marvellous right now. Everything in bloom. Summer isn't that far.

PS: Zurich doesn't have real big sites like other cities. It's more the charm of the old town, the lake, the parks, the wonderful small restaurants, all the cultural events, etc. that makes it a wonderful place to visit and to live in. ;o)
Have fun!

Ursula, I want to ask you what the carnival is that was on last november when I was in Zurich? There were a lot of west indian steel drum bands and they were fabulous, we followed them around in the evening. Is it a yearly event and why the costumes, they were incredible and so cleverly thought out?

Good day, Kathy!

Well, strangely enough, there is always that event on November 11 starting the carneval season which only is on for good sometime in February then.

Anyway, Zurich's carneval is peanuts compared to the one in Basel and Lucerne. WI steel drum bands are typical for Zurich and Lucerne, but are not really that genuine for Basel's Fasnacht which is a rather special event, difficult to understand for foreigners and even for Swiss not living in Basel itself.

I'd say, it's just another event here in Zurich and it's always on 11/11, just for one day! Sorry, no idea why it is that particular day. But then, I am not a Fasnacht fan!

BTW, when I was in Lucerne this past January, I bumped into a similar event at the train station. Tons of steel drum bands looking forward to the real carneval later in the year.

PS:
I forgot to mention that not only it takes place on 11/11, but it starts at exactly 11.11 AM!

Thanks for that Ursula, I really enjoyed them. Seems you folk are always having a great time celebrating something, in Basel once it was celebration of the trams, plus lots of market stalls for football clubs selling things to eat and drink and then another time in Basel a huge jazz festival.
Now you are celebrating taking the America's Cup off us but if we can raise the money and have a boat that doesn't fall apart, LOL, we might get it back off you.
