Zermatt Lodging Recommendation??

We will be skiing in Zermatt toward to the end of winter. We are 2 travelers looking for a good, clean, conveniently-located place to stay.

We don't know much about the geography of Zermatt. I guess we'd like to be close to places to eat, and not too far away from the main lift for skiing.

We have enough money to pay for cleanliness and hopefully a private bathroom. However, we don't need luxury. Something in the 7 area on a scale of 1-10 (10 best) is what we're looking for.

Suggestions?? Thanks.

Hi,
A few years back we stayed at the Hotel Butterfly (a Best Western) in Zermatt. Very nice and a good location. Actually, Zermatt isn't a big place, so everything is within walking distance.

We also stayed at the Butterfly although we did not ski. We found it to be convenient, clean and reasonably priced. It had been recommended to us by friends who also stayed there. Zermatt is one of my top destinations even though I don't ski.

I have also stayed at the Butterfly and highly recommend it. The village isn't very large and pretty much everything is within walking distance. You can look at other accommodations at www.zermatt.ch

Abe, I provided some hotel reccos on your other post. I would agree you don’t know much about Zermatt geography with your reference to the “main lift”. There is no main lift in Zermatt, there are three main mountains which you can ski, and two of them are accessed via train and not cable car. You have to decide which area you want to ski, you can pick different areas each day. Other than choosing a hotel which is ski in (rare in Zermatt, see my other post), is does not matter too much where your hotel is located as you will probably want to ski different areas each day, and will end up walking/busing to a cable car or train. Personally I prefer the Gornegrat and Sunegga areas as IMO they offer more to the intermediate and advance skier; others like the Klein Matterhorn area. (I think it is too windblown and does not get enough sun.) Take a look at /bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/e, click on “facilities & ski runs” for info on the ski areas. There is also a live webcam of various parts of the mountain at http://bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/e/web-cam/

The Hotel Alpina is a 2 star in town which gets good reccos on this site, take a look at http://www.alpina-zermatt.ch
