I struggle with seeing new places and going back to places I really like, but frankly, of all the places I'd like to go back to, Paris is the only place I *need* to go back to. So that said, my big compromise recently has been Paris every other year, new place (including domestic locales) on those non-Paris years. Am I suffering? No! Of course, I'd love to go to Paris every year...but we're just not there yet.
I, too, get a hard time with the whole "Paris again?" thing. I don't see how it's much different from people who have a vacation home that they visit every year. Granted, I don't own the home/apt I'm staying in every year, but other than that, it's the same concept. I'm going just to be there (as Judy said upthread) and yes, even to relax. R & R in Paris is fabulous.

YankyGal, I would happily go back to Paris every other year or so too, but sadly there are so many other places I want to see as well.
but on the topic of places one "needs" to go back to, I know someone [a Church of England vicar to be precise] who has been to Rome more than 50 times. i thought he was quite mad, until i went there myself - and realised that an entire life-time might not be long enough.
so far i've only managed one more trip, but Rome is my "Paris again?" place.

We realized that we have been certain places too many times and forgot to see the rest of the world. And while there is great delight in revisiting, seeing what we have never seen before has its own wonders.

@ira-
I think I still have the T-shirt my parents gave me 20 years ago.
Everyone's different. I have a friend who never goes to the same place twice. Once she's seen it, that's that. Me-if I like a place(London,Paris), I'll go numerous times. There's no wrong way, IMHO.
That said, my way's best.

Uh Oh. Since I bought a house in the Dordogne and went there every year for 20 years, am I a boring person too?"
We did take other trips to other places...lots of them. But maybe we really are boring people.

After 8 trips to Paris with the 9th in the planning, I showed MDH this thread. He laughed and said:
"There's also a difference between getting laid and making love. One is been there-done that, the other is a whole different experience." He's got a point.
Yikes! I hope this doesn't get me thrown off of Fodors!

I did not know they had early bird specials and Publix in the Dordogne.

I think that there are so many replies to the "Paris for the repeat visitor" thread really does show that Paris is an endless fountain of matchless experiences for those of us who love it.
We have a tendency to visit a place 3-4 times in a row and then move on to a new place. So, after 3 years in a row vacationing in Maui, we moved on to Paris, 3 years there In a row and this year it will be Rome. We are so excited about exploring Rome and a little sad because we will miss Paris. We have also been very nostalgic for Maui lately! I feel certain we will return to Maui and Paris both....but I also think there may very well be a few years dedicated to Italy! Who knows...there never seems to be enough time and money to travel as much as we want to!

Have been...it is beautiful but only a few days there works for me. A bit too laid back and it rained every afternoon, which I did not like. There are some amazing sites there, however and I know many who like it best of all the islands.

denise - for some reason or other i didn't make it to Rome until i was 50, [though i'd been to Italy half a dozen times by then] and I was kicking myself that I'd left it so long.
I am absolutely positive that if you like Paris, you will love Rome.

Me, I'm just the opposite. If one more person, including the one I rent a villa from in Provence says: "Are you going to Provence again---I guess you really like it there"?!!!, I will just cry! Am I boring?
That said, "they" are starting to get to me, so I was thinking of seeing another part of France that I haven't been to yet. I'm dragging a little on this plan to combine perhaps the Dordogne with Provence. Is it boring to return to the same area again and again?
And by the way, I could see someone not wanting to go back to Paris. It may not be their thing. Not me however--I can't get enough and have been many times. But others in my family have had enough. I'd love to tag along with Mimi someday! With people as in love with it as I am...

Living in close proximity to NYC, it would seem extremely weird to say, "I'm not going into the city again - been there, done that."
I do love Paris, and I understand those who prefer Florence or Rome, but to strike a whole city like that off your list after 3 days reminds me of this poem:
Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so.
After all, the sky flashes, the great sea yearns,
we ourselves flash and yearn,
and moreover my mother told me as a boy
(repeatingly) ‘Ever to confess you’re bored
means you have no
Inner Resources.’ I conclude now I have no
inner resources, because I am heavy bored.
Peoples bore me,
literature bores me, especially great literature,
Henry bores me, with his plights & gripes
as bad as achilles,
who loves people and valiant art, which bores me.
And the tranquil hills, & gin, look like a drag
and somehow a dog
has taken itself & its tail considerably away
into mountains or sea or sky, leaving
behind: me, wag.

If you travel with the same not adventurous as you,
I would expect you to be bored.
I like this quote but don't know where it came from.
A person needs at intervals to separate from family and companions and go to new places. One must go without familiars in order to be open to influences, to change.
