Young Newleweds moving to Lakenheath.. HELP!

So me and my fiancee are getting married next month, and he moves to RAF Lakenheath in March, and im soon to follow in July (so i can get everything together.) RIght now hes at tech @ Shepphard, and im trying to finish school..
It will be our first home-away-from-home, and its soo far so im freaking out!
I need some help..
I have many questions, and if you can even answer ONE i would greatly appreciate it..

first off, we have no pets, well i have a teacup chihuahua and he hates him lol so im planning his new home already... so we dont have to worry about the mircochip thingyyy...

2nd, on base are the outlets in the housing the same as american outlets? I know europe has completely different outlets but ive been reading on this site that Lakenheath is like a "little America". so same outlets or no??? Also, if theyre not can you buy converters @ the BX???

3rd, whats the deal with the cars? ive heard that we need to buy a moped or something because the driveways arent big enough for cars.. hmm..

are the houses on base that small?? can someone send me pictures???

did you buy your furniture / beds / fridges etc. at the BX? or is there a place close by (like a target....) where you can buy all that? does it have a website where our parents/family can do the 'gift-registery' thing?? if you know what i mean, and then have it shipped from there to our house.?

how was the flight over there?? ihavent been on a plane in about 5 years, except when we flew from home (california) to lackland for my airmans graduation.. me and his mother were scared to death! lol but i heard the flights pretty nice.. yay or nay?

anything else you might want to add, pleeease add. im gonna be doing all this by myself, as i have with planning the wedding. im sure you all know (wife or husband) how you have to do everything alone while they're away.

but thank god exodus is just around the corner!

anyways, thanks a bunch for any and all replies.

xoxoxo.

Just do a search on Lakenheath and you'll find one or two threads that you may find useful.

Moving overseas can definitely be overwhelming, but everything does work out.

Here's a link to info about housing:

http://www.lakenheath.af.mil/library...et.asp?id=4272

The term "little America" just refers to the large number of Americans who live in the area. It doesn't mean that things are just like home.

Re: outlets. If you don't have 110 outlets, you can buy transformers at the BX, but they're expensive, heavy, and inconvenient. The military will give you big appliances (washer, dryer, microwave, fridge) to use, and you'll probably want to replace small appliances with a 220 version.

You can buy furniture on base, but the selection isn't really great. If people want to send you gifts, they can use your APO address, which costs the same as mailing within the States. You can't mail big furniture, though, so if there's something you want, you should probably buy it in the States before you go and let the military move it for you.

As far as the flight goes...its basically 6+ hours sitting in a cramped area trying to be comfortable. Usually not horrible, but definitely not a lot of fun either.

Good luck!

1) relax about all those little detailed questions - you will have a sponsor who will be in contact and answer just about anything you need.

2) Are you sure you will be living on base? (Your sponsor will help you w/ that info). There isn't enough housing on base for everyone so many families live in surrounding communities.

3) Forget about the moped idea -- a scooter isn't the preferred mode of transport in sleet/rain/snow/rain/rain. Who said driveways are too narrow for cars - you just have to aim better to make them fit

Do a search on 'Lakenheath' - there have been 2 or 3 recent threads answering all sorts of questions (including some you may not have considered yet)

The local driveways aren't too small for the local cars. You just need to adjust your perspectives - everything is way smaller - houses, apartments, cars, appliances etc.

One thing you might make use of is the free shuttle bus (space available) to Heathrow or Gatwick airports. It makes a visit to London cheap and easy. From Heathrow you can just take the tube into London.

When you are there, step into the Bird in Hand in Mildenhall just opposite the base and have a pint and some fish and chips for me. You will love it there. If your husband has the leave, Mildenhall has some good space available flights to Ramstein AFB Germany.
