Xmas break- any ideas?

My husband and I are thinking of taking a break over Christmas, possibly for one week from 22nd or 23rd.

We live in Dublin and would like to go somewhere not more than 4 hours flying time.

We have spent time in Paris and Italy in the last year so possibly rule them out.

We are thinking Europe or Middle East (we'd stretch the flying time to get somewhere really interesting)

We usually like holidays with lots to see and do, but a rest would be good too! We don't like to "waste" our free time lying around. We would also like to keep costs down as we've already had our holiday this year!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Greece? Spain? Portugal? It sounds wonderful to me to be so close to so many places.

Things to see and do, while keeping costs down: suggests a city break in central/eastern Europe - Istanbul? Krakow?

I hear that Baghdad is interesting. Avg highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s (F) in Dec.

We live in the UK now and have decided on the South of France for Christmas - Nice to be precise. I'm hoping the weather will not be too bitterly cold, maybe even some sun if we are lucky.

Two other areas in France we considered was around Aix-en-Provence/Avignon and also Strasbourg. They all sounded great but Strasbourg sounded a bit too cold for us.

How about Malta? We stayed in Valletta a few years ago and just loved it. Also stayed on Gozo, one of the other Maltese islands and enjoyed that too. If you click on my name, you'll see a report that was recently topped.

Ira, seriously, is that necessary? If you don't have something constructive to add, why post?

travellingnead- We have decided to visit Munich and Salzburg over Christmas. We also spent last Christmas in Barcelona/Girona and enjoyed it very much. Barcelona and Girona were relatively inexpensive IMHO.

We have spent a couple of Christmases in Munich and Salzburg. We have really enjoyed it. The Christmas markets are open until the 24th then things are very quiet on Christmas and the day after.
