I stayed at the Hotel Roma. I was on a tour of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco and Lisbon is where we landed on NYE. I found Portugal to be a bit less expensive than Spain, but equally beautiful. We visited Coimbra and Sintra also, and did some driving along the coastline. I have heard that the Portugese island of Madeira is a great place for NYE, but I haven't been there myself.

Well it's a small world, rkkwan!! Yes I was on that exact tour and I was also very pleased with that hotel. That's got to be the only hotel in the world where you can make a really cheap overseas call from the room. I can't remember the rate, but I know it was a lot cheaper than using a calling card, and in those days I didn't have a cell phone that worked in Europe. Also there was a fantastic Italian restaurant just a block or two away, where I had my dinner before going to the party at the main square.
I thought I wouldn't like that hotel at first because our room faced the railroad tracks. But the insulation in the room must have been pretty impressive because I never heard trains running through the night. Either that or I drank so much champagne that I slept right through it.
