I spent NYE in Lisbon a couple of years ago. They had a wild party in the main square w/laser lights and fireworks at midnight. The weather was nice at that time of year, probably much warmer than Paris.

Where did you stay? Did you only see Lisbon or did you travel around Portugal?

I stayed at the Hotel Roma. I was on a tour of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco and Lisbon is where we landed on NYE. I found Portugal to be a bit less expensive than Spain, but equally beautiful. We visited Coimbra and Sintra also, and did some driving along the coastline. I have heard that the Portugese island of Madeira is a great place for NYE, but I haven't been there myself.

dom11 - Sorry for going off-topic here.

But Pam, were you on an organized tour? My parents went on Cosmos' Spain/Portugal/Morroco tour in May of this year, and they also stayed at Roma. They think it's a great hotel.

Well it's a small world, rkkwan!! Yes I was on that exact tour and I was also very pleased with that hotel. That's got to be the only hotel in the world where you can make a really cheap overseas call from the room. I can't remember the rate, but I know it was a lot cheaper than using a calling card, and in those days I didn't have a cell phone that worked in Europe. Also there was a fantastic Italian restaurant just a block or two away, where I had my dinner before going to the party at the main square.

I thought I wouldn't like that hotel at first because our room faced the railroad tracks. But the insulation in the room must have been pretty impressive because I never heard trains running through the night. Either that or I drank so much champagne that I slept right through it. :-p
