I would suggest Verdun. I must say though that it's the only WW I site that I have visited and I sure there are many others but we chose Verdun. Lots to see with museums and monuments, trenches and undergound fortifications. Also nearby is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery where over 14,000 American dead are buried. I echo kerouac - Verdun is the most provoking and largest WW 1 center as the battle raged here for a long time with teh two sides barely changing places - just gas bombing and flame throwing, etc poor schmucks in muddy trenches - disease caused many deaths too.
