Here are two trip reports that will give you some idea of where you can go and what you can see:

I would suggest Verdun. I must say though that it's the only WW I site that I have visited and I sure there are many others but we chose Verdun. Lots to see with museums and monuments, trenches and undergound fortifications. Also nearby is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery where over 14,000 American dead are buried. You can read about our visit in the Verdun area on our blog. Here's a link:

Verdun is definitely the most impressive battlefield area since all of the bomb craters are still there, as well as some destroyed villages -- it is a more complete experience than just visiting cemeteries.

I echo kerouac - Verdun is the most provoking and largest WW 1 center as the battle raged here for a long time with teh two sides barely changing places - just gas bombing and flame throwing, etc poor schmucks in muddy trenches - disease caused many deaths too.

Kerouac already echoed kerouac!

AnselmAdorne's trip reports are wonderful! So happy to see them 'topped' again.
