Worship services at churches in London?
Can someone help me with deciding upon a Sunday church service in London. We will be staying in the Westminister area, but will consider traveling to another area. My husband and I are Episcopalians and the couple traveling with us are Presbyterians. Also, what are the usual times of the services? I have tried finding this information on the internet, but the information is about just touring the churches. Thanks for helping.

The United Reformed Church is the successor to the Presbyterian Church of England, formed in 1972 by the union with the Congregational Church in England and Wales. You can find info on this church and locations in London at http://www.urc.org.uk/.

For the Church of England, the website for the Diocese of London is http://www.london.anglican.org/
I agree w/ xxx. I have yet to see a church web site that did not include information about services.

www.westminster-abbey.org/ is typical. It has all the information you will need to plan your visit. Basically most churches have morning and mid-day services and Evensong most days.

Normally the congregation sit in the nave, which is in the front half of the church as you come in from the west end. For most services, if you get there early enough, the stewards let you sit in the choir which gives an excellent view of the choristers, or in the transepts, which run across the main body of the church near the sanctuary. For some services they use the nave altar, for which everyone sits in the nave. The early Communion on Sundays at 8 am takes place in Henry VII chapel which is at the far east end of the abbey, with fantastic fan vaulting. Nearby is the shrine of Edward the Confessor.

The London Times on either Saturday or Sunday, I can never remember which, lists the services at all the principal London churches and some outlying cathedrals including which music will be sung. There are usually morning services at around 8 and 11 as well as sung evensong which on Sundays usually takes place around 3 or 4 p.m.

I attended services this year at both St Martin in the Fields and Westminster Abbey. Though the building is much more impressive at the Abbey, I enjoyed the service at St Martin much more.

They also serve a nice meal in the crypt beneath.

Keith
