Ragdoll, do you mean that everything is sold out on booking sites, or when contacting the hotels themselves? I would suggest you to ask your question directly to a hotel you like, and hope to get an honest answer, and perhaps be on some kind of 'waiting list' as soon as they decide which number of rooms to give to the public.

We have been able to secure accomodations in Hamburg and Berlin (for a fortune, by the way). We are now in the planning phase of the rest of our trip. From Berlin we plan to head south to Munich, Salzburg, Fussen, Black Forest, Baden Baden, Heidelburg, Frankfurt and fly out of Paris. Since it is difficult to determine how much time we'll be spending in any given place, do you think we need to made advance reservations for lodging? We are concerned that with World Cup in Germany, even the smallest and most remote locations will be booked. We'd rather not have to pin ourselves down to being in certain locations on certain days. We'd rather just look for "zimmer frie". What do you think?

ragdoll,

great that you were able to secure lodging by now.

I think it is hard to forecast on how booked hotels are going to be for the world cup.
I should think that it'll be mandatory to book ahead for the cities where matches will be played. From your list that would be Munich and Frankfurt. Salzburg, Austria might be critical, too, as there is an annual festival of theatre being held during summers.
Heidelberg always draws a lot of tourists, so traffic might be even heavier there, too.
I don't know how important quality lodging is for you. If not, my guess is that it'll be possible to find somwhere to crash almost anywhere in the end.

From the string of replies, I get the sense that "scalping" will be impossible for World Cup. Is this really the case? I have already booked a flight to Germany and plan to obtain tickets "by any means necessary". I find it hard to believe that tickets can't be transferred. This will take the nationalism out of the crowd - the best part of the cup.

FIFA has taken steps to try to make tickets non-transferable. Each ticket will have a name on it. I understand this was also the case in Japan/Korea and that nobody checked to ensure the name on the tickets matched the holder of the tickets. FIFA wants to avoid scalping, but the practical reality is that they cannot check 50,000 fans as they file into the stadium. They'll be more interested in checking what people are carrying than they are on ensuring people don't have scalped tickets. If you don't look like a hooligan, and if you're not drunk, I would expect you'll be able to use a ticket with someone else's name on it.
