Women's Travel Shoe Dilemma

I have those exact Ecco shoes. I love the way they look, and they feel great for tooling around in and out of cars, and for medium-length walks, but (for me at least) they do not have enough cushioning for the serious pavement pounding I do while traveling. And I cannot imagine mules giving enough support either, although I do think you'll want to bring a sandal of some sort--it's too hot in Italy in the summer to wear closed shoes all day long. And it's good to have two pairs of shoes to rotate.

The shoes that I found great for heavy travel walking are Valencias, made by Rockport. They come in black (and other colors) and are amazingly cushioned, soft, and light weight. You can find them at www.zappos.com and www.rockport.com.

Interesting that shoes can be such a passionate conversation but I am having the same one with other Euro travelers.
I typically walk over 20 miles a day when I take my mom and dad to Italy....they are relentless.
I have tried every variety of shoes and will swear by NAOTs and Mephisto. If you have any kind of arch, you will not regret the support.
NAOT has some particularly stylish shoes that would be super with capri pants but Mephisto sandles are equally good for comfort.
Since the cobblestones are killers, I stay away from any narrow heal and stick with the flats.
Good luck.

Thank you all so much for your posts. I cannot believe how many of you have my "bowling shoes". I also have the black with tan. My 16 year old daughter has not stopped laughing at these shoes yet. I am also happy to hear they are in fashion in France. So I am in style and didn't even know it. I have been wearing them for the past four days in the house and I never believed people before when they said they didn't even know they had shoes on, but these are that comfortable. I am still waffling about bringing some type of sandal, but I don't see myself walking 10 hours in sandals of any kind. I tried some Clarks last week and brought them back.
I am looking at a pair of Hush Puppies believe it or not on the JCPenny website called Firelights $49. I don't know much about the walking comfort of Hush Puppies. Do any of you? Check them out if you get the chance.
Pat, can you tell me where you got the Naturalizer Eurosoles and is that the name of them? My husband plans on wearing his old deck shoes. I have a feeling he will be sitting in the room. He has no idea how important it is on vacation to not have sore feet. Karen

Definitely bring the Eccos. I bought a pair of Mephisto's, $243, and even though they were outrageously expensive they are worth every penny. I swear by them. Can (and have) walked forever in them all over Europe, Southeast Asia etc. Mephisto will recondition the leather for free so should have them forever. I also own a pair of Clark's sandals which are very comfortable but for a long day of sightseeing I'd go with the shoes with the most support. Bring the Eccos.
