Winter in Venice

I was in Venice for NYE a few years back and it was freezing (literally). The skies were a brilliant blue for every one of the 4 days I was there and it was, of course, wonderful. I wore several layers, plus a fleece, fleece vest, and gortex jacket, and woolly hat, and was fine - but it was hard taking the gloves off to take a photo!
Having said that, it might not have been 'normal' weather.

No tourists in February? It's the carnival month and Venice is packed with tourists and expensive! The carnival ends on February 8, 2005.
Last year it was raining all through the carnival, it was very cold, we even had one day of light snow, and oneday that part of San Marco was flooded. BUT, Venice is Venice and even under those weather conditions the carnival was a real experience and the town as charming and as beautiful as always.

I was in Venice a few years ago, one week before Carnivale. The shopkeepers and locals were very busy; there were few tourists. It was very, very cold, but we were prepared with heavy coats, umbrellas and boots. Lots of rain. This, however, did not keep us from doing anything, including a gondola ride.
We thought Venice was charming in the winter. We have since been there in the summer and the fall. I am so glad that my first visit to Venice was in the wintertime, without the hordes of tourists. I felt like we pretty much had the city to ourselves!

Postal,
My first trip to Venice was in late March (we had been skiing in the Dolomiti). We wore long wool coats, but didn't need hats or gloves. It didn't rain. Overcast and damp, no crowds! Wonderful!
Second trip was in May. Perfect temps, but much more croweded and humid. A wind storm came in for 2 days and blew away all the humidity. The lagoon sparkled and the skies were blue.
Venice is wonderful at any time!

Postal, you can check historical weather in Venice on wunderground.com
Like alice13, I was in Venice for nye ('02) but unlike her experience, it was quite mild temps for 4 of the 5 days I was there. I went prepared for freezing and was peeling off layers. It did rain or drizzle almost every day (we only saw the sun on the day we were leaving), lots of that atmospheric fog and one day (NY eve day) it just plurted with rain. Do check when Carnevale is. Prices go up dramatically.

We were in Venice in Feburary 2003. We needed coats and gloves and wore turtlenecks and jeans and were fine. We were outside every day and even had lunch outside one day on the banks fo the Grand Canal. We take advantage of lower airfares and hotel rates and use our kid's Feburary School break for our Europe trips. It has made Europe affordable for the family.

alice13, I wonder if we were there the same time? I had the same weather my NYE trip - brilliant blue skies for most of it, but cold cold cold. still, it was lovely - nearly deserted. I didn't see many children either, how sad - I understand the native Venetian population is dwindling year by year. Although I did meet a native Venetian in London once - a rare breed!

flygirl - such fun to remember. 1999/2000 - u know the big one - I was in NZ with a dear friend, not often caught up with, to see the sun rise on the new century in Gisborne. It was the year after - 2000/1 - that I was in Venice.
And if it was abnormal weather - then lucky us. I treasure the memory - it was my third (but longest) visit. I don't expect I shall ever visit again.
I went to Torcello that time. Standing on the jetty waiting for the boat - freezing. I .. enough. It's such a wonderful place.
Very best wishes.

We were in Venice the 1st week of March 04. Rained the first and forth day but otherwise bright and sunny. The cool weather was a refreshing change for someone from Florida. Given the lower prices and lack of crouwds I wouldn't go at any time of year.
I highly recommend the Hotel Ala... I learned of it on this forum.
All year round, there's rain in Venice's weather forcast. So bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacked and have fun.
