My husband and I were in Venice briefly in April...it was wonderful! (4 trips to Italy and have always avoided it,,yes I know, wrongly!)
Anyway,,we tend to go places at odd times, and my husband mentioned it would be fun to come back in the winter,,,perhaps January sometime.
Would it be flooding, too cold, too nasty (we don't mind)etc,, or would it be a good time.? I KNOW the crowds would be at a minimum!

I haven't been to Venezia in January,but I was just there this past February at the end of the month and it was magical.The weather was crisp but comfortable and the streets were wonderfully open.When I return,it will most likely be in winter again.

I would love to visit Venice in low season. I can imagine that January will be cold but then again there are no crowds. And I've seen photos of Venice in wintertime and it seems (in my opinion) nicer, 'magical' as massagediva mentions. If it snows it'll be even nicer I would think.

Mari - I prefer Venice in January/February rather than the summer.
I saw it last year in the snow - a real delight.

I just have to mention that I was in Venice during the acqua alta spoken of in that link, - in early November of 2004! It actually brought back some nice memories, looking at those pictures

The Venetians deal with it with such aplomb - no big deal at all. You just put on a pair of boots and deal with it.

Anyway, back to the original post - I have only been in Venice in the fall and I love it. It is a lovely time to visit and Venice is peaceful and very romantic, I think. I imagine that the winter months are even more special. Have a wonderful time!

If it's dry weather it will be pleasant, but if it rains the combination of wet (you needn't have acqua alta to get plenty of water/deep puddles on the walkways in Venice), cold, and wind can be pretty miserable. Not a problem if you're prepared, of course, so just make sure you bring some waterproof footwear and appropriate outerwear. I've worn long underwear in Venice, and been happy to have it.

I've heard from some experienced travelers that the only time they'd go to Venice is in January.

After having experienced Venice in May - the only time I'd ever go back is in January. While our weather was glorious, there were just too many tourists and the town felt more like a theme park.
