No, Joann, you are WRONG!
The machines at Jamaica Station issue a MetroCard Combo for LIRR! The card lets you through the turnstyle to exit AirTrain and then you can use it for LIRR to Penn Station.
Once I bought PEAK MetroCard for non-peak time and conductor on LIRR gave it back to me so I could use it for subway to Port Authority.

You purchase a one-way LIRR ticket with a $5 Air Train JFK Metro Card at the Air Train ticket machines in Jamaica.
