Will we be able to check bags through from Rome to JFK/Boston, we have a <24 hour layover in Paris?

This is a duplicate post as I inadvertently posted to the US forum.
I am hoping for some help please. We are leaving Rome on a Thursday morning and arriving in Paris at about 12:30pm. We then depart for JFK/Boston at 8:30am the next day, Friday. Does anyone know if we are able to check our luggage through? If we can, is this risky? Thank you.

For the "able to" question: if you are using the same airline, there should be no problem. You could contact them to make sure.

If you are using 2 different airlines, check with the Rome/Paris airline to see if they have a partnership agreement (don't remember the exact word) with the other airline to check your luggage straight through.

As for "is this risky?"-can't say for sure as I've never had a layover of that length before. But I'm sure there will be experienced voices posting info soon, so stay tuned...

I don't know if this will help you but...
On our recent trip to Rome, we flew thru Newark to Mpls. (Alitalia to Newark, NW to Mpls).
We had to claim our bags in Newark then drop them off (but not recheck) for them to be put on the NW flight.
They were tagged in Rome for Newark and Mpls.

As a follow-up to what julie said, you always have to pick up your luggage for customs (and then immediately return them as julie said) on your first US stop from overseas (regardless of airlines). So if the airline says you can check all the way through, you won't have to pick up your bags in Paris, but you will have to get them in JFK.

Yes,I remember picking up luggage at JFK from Paris and going through customs there. I forgot. We are flying Air France to Paris and then on to JFK the next morning. It would be great to avoid picking up and re-checking the next morning. Any thoughts on the safety of the luggage if we do so? When would we go through customs? Since Italy and France are the EU, are we all set from our arrival? When we are coming from the US our first stop is also Paris and then on to Florence. Do we go through customs in Paris vs. our destination (which is the same day, by the way). I promise to write about our experiences when we return. My daughter was nice enough buy a very nice journal for me to record our trip.
