Wild camping in the Lake District?

Is this possible? We wild camp in Scotland every summer but as the weather has been so unpredictable we were thinking of heading south to the Lake District but friends seem to think that wild camping is mostly prohibited in the area. Any help? Only been once before and stayed in a wee chalet type thing.

If you do it on the fells (ie above the tree line) then there shouldn't a problem. Do it low down and you'll have a highly irate farmer with you in 5 minutes

the weather is no less predictible in the Lakes than it is in Scotland. Don't know if I'd want to sleep rough in either place in a high or remote area.

But if you manage it in Scotland - yes there are open areas in the Lakes.

It's hardly "sleeping rough". We are seasoned campers and have great equipment. The weather may be just as unpredictable but it's definitely less likely to be as bad as the North of Scotland is.

oops I said that backwards "no more predictible . . ."

Anyway - I didn't mean "rough" like a dosser. But wild camping like what you described w/o any improvement/facilities. But the Fells can have just as trecherous/changeable weather as most parts of northern Scotland.

Thanks for the advice.
