I am going to Great Britain this summer for 10 days. I won't be able to go to both the, Lake District and Scotland, and must choose one. Any recommendations on which to visit?

Scotland. The Lake District is pretty. but Scotland is magnificent. Also, the Lake District will be full, making parking difficult (no, I'm not exaggerating). Scotland won't.

I 100% agree w/ her --I don't live there but Scotland is my favorite place on Earth. There is more to see than you could possibly get to in 10 days (or 10 months). In fact w/ just 10 days you'd have some hard decisions re what to cut out.

What sorts of things are you interested in seeing/doing? Will you have a car? Start by looking at a guide book or two and clicking on DESTINATIONS above. We can help you work out a great itinerary -- but you need a little bit of focus.

Well, I fear you can't miss out Edinburgh, although I'm more of a country girl myself. 3/4 days in Edinburgh (at the end if it were me), and the rest in Argyll and the Islands.

There are hundreds of options and some constraints. What do you like?

As an emigrant Scot, I suggest that you spend 2 or 3 days in York in the North of England. Personally, I think it beats anything that Scotland has to offer.

I will have 4 days in Edinburgh. In these 4 days I would like to also go to St. Andrews. With this what places should I include in my trip. I will have a car.

I love the countryside, castles & highlands.

OK. With 10 days in Scotland, finishing in Edinburgh, focussing on the countryside, castle and highlands, I would, myself, go west, young man. Assume you are flying into Glasgow or Edinburgh, and you're crossing the pond, so you don't want to drive far day 1, get an hour or so out of your airport(if Glasgow head for Loch Lomond and if Edinburgh, head for Balquhidder.

Day 2, head to Inverary, then Lochgilphead then north up towards Oban.

Day 3/4 visit an island- Mull & Iona, or Coll or Tiree. We need to check days and timetables to see what works.

Day 5 go to somewhere round Culloden.

Day 6, north Perthshire

Day 7 etc Edinburgh.

How does that sound? Look at a map; tell us what you think I've missed out and we can refine a bit.

And do stay a night or 2 in Glasgow...it's a fine, historic and cultural city with dead friendly people...and also not known as The Dear Green Place for nothing!
