Any guide book will give Le Havre short shrift, since, after all, it was bombed to dust in 1944 by the Allies. It was replaced after the war by a city built totally from concrete. Who could want to see such a place? So ugly! There are so many other things to see in Normandy.

And yet, in 2005, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

cos that's where the boats take us when we britons want to escape to a civilised country with better plumbing, more fit women, and edible food.

Why le Havre? Because the museum there has a fine collection of Dufy paintings. And a good gift shop, too.

I've bookmarked it and will show the photos to my father the next time I visit him. Growing up, he's mentioned on many occasions that part of his family was from there.

As a small boy I spent many a long week in Le Havre and the views of the concrete centre brings it all back, I can almost smell the pong in those walk ways. Still the towering church looks great.
