Dear Marilyn,

Beautifully said. I have found Fodors to be a community in every sense of the word. We might bicker (sorry rex!) among ourselves but there is an underlying sense of care and concern that is genuine as evidenced by all the reasons you laid out.

"Fodorites range in age from teenagers to people in their 90s."

I'd like to know just who gave away my age???!!! Just because I'm half toothless doesn't mean such revelation and exposure is necessary!

Going along with Marilyn's post (a very good one IMO) read jorr's Friday Rants & Raves if you think people here don't care about each other StikkyB.

Basically, I think most perceived problems arise from those who post too much. They can, at times, feel it's necessary to post from dawn to midnight -- to every topic, every time, just to be heard. They think all thoughts passing through their minds - however trivial, mundane or off-topic - simply must be heard and are of utmost importance for all readers. Hardly. These individuals seem to exhibit diminished self-restraint and less tolerance for opposing viewpoints, which leads to spats. For these people, at least some of them, once a spat takes root then it becomes a matter of proving superiority (so all watching can witness their glory). A pissing match, you see.

Most of the time these interactions are so staid that they are boring from the onset.

actually i think things here have been quite civil the last couple years...i read long before i actually joined the foray...it was much more intimidating before the shake-up...the information here is sooooooo excellent that a little attitude once in awhile isn't much of a trade-off (imho)actually a lot of attitude is kind of fun and marilyn is right about many people going way overboard to help others...

Some people are rude intentionally - to make a point.

Some people are rude unintentionally - and some people see rudeness where there is none intended, (On these boards you have people from all over the world and many different backgrounds - and what is rude to some - is playful, ironic or good-naturedly sarcastic to others.)

Also - things frequently come across differently in wirting than they would in conversation - and most of us don;t have time to continually polish/edit what we write.

(Not to be rude - but there are ocassionally people on this board who seem to have come from a Stepford Wives movie - and think that anything that isn;t happy, peppy, smiley, perky and cheerful is rude. The world - including this board - is simply not like that. And expecting it to be so is extremely unrealistic.)

As long as their are no direct personal attacks or vile language - I think rude is too strong a word.

And then there are trolls.

"Some people are rude intentionally - to make a point."

And some people are rude intentionally with no point at all except that it makes them feel very, very good.

That is so true KT. I suppose sarcasm can be taken for intentional rudeness, but tone down the sarcasm. It's not always appreciated and can be perceived as total rudeness. If those who are sarcastic can't accept this, then that's too bad.

This would appear to be nytraveler's MO.

If you think this forum contains 'rude' folk, check out the Lonely Planet 'Thorntreeworld'. Posters there are very uninhibited!

In light of rockhopper's comment, I wish to clarify that my comment was NOT directed at nytraveler.

Rockhopper7-

Why you insist on attacking me like this I will never understand. I don;t recall ever having said anything rude to you - intentionally or not.

But if it makes you happy - and keeps you busy and amused - be my guest.

Interesting comment eldon -- is this what you mean by such sarcasm, or was this merely meant to be rude? I can't tell.

I'm curious why this four month old post was suddenly brought back up. But meanwhile I think it's interesting that a month after this original post, JamesA posted a bit of search advice to others about how to search for a budget hotel in Rome. It would be nice if he'd come back here and tell us what if anything he found for his trip next month -- if it's still on.

hi patrick- Someone was asking about central, clean, cheap hotels in Rome yesterday and I remembered this "classic"... sorry didn't mean to annoy.

Oy Suzie! Don't apologize. He's always annoyed...

Marilyn and NY Traveler -- you both have very good points.

This thread has me rolling...it's like a magnet for all the rude people to say "kiss off" sprinkled with a few answers to the OP's question.

Of course, I'm just busy trying to figure out how I can keep my weight gain DOWN to 5 lbs. when I go to London and Paris next month.

Happy Travels. Mean it.

Jules

There's a whole lot of really valuable information on this forum, and also a whole lot of nonsense.

Not unlike anywhere/everywhere you go...

All you have to do is pay attention to the good stuff (and there is much, invaluable, good stuff) and ignore the rest.

Your "first post", for example, is curious reading, but otherwise worth just breezing by...

Those of us in search of "insider" tips, not found in any of the tour guides, or on any of the websites, generously provided by those who contribute here, find it well worth their while to sift through the "bad apples" for positively incredible tips and information.

No matter where you go, or who you're with, those "picky" and "rude" people may just know something absolutely worthwhile and utterly incredible you would never, ever, have learned about otherwise.

As for "Anyway, most of you must either be supreme snobs or socially inept, I can't decide which." Well, you did say that you've been reading but have never contributed.

Curiously, those of us who continue to contribute invaluable tips and information to those who haven't picked up or read a single tour guide, or searched the web, or even explored the resources withing this website, or even grabbed a simple map, don't mind continuing to contribute, despite jerks such as yourself who can't think of anything better to do than criticize the "bad apples", when you've been reading but not contributing.

Well, gosh, but who's being "rude" here?
