Yep, Patrick, that's fine to copy and paste. You are annoyed about 99.9% of the time. Okay, I'm sorry that's sarcasm (that's what it's called here), but it is perceived as rudeness to many! Just accept that! And the time you and the other helper here gave 'helpful hints' to a new member about posting in all caps, it seems ironic that you seem to be posting in all caps to emphasize certain words. Oh, I forgot, since you wrote it it's acceptable.

Clifton: that link is hysterical.

Now should we assign names? Best not...

Hello All,

Personally, I just love the fact that the mere TITLE of the post has gotton 80 people to respond!

The best thing I've gotton out of it is Jsmith's Jane Austen quote...geez, I can only hope to find another site to post that on myself!

I've only seen one rude poster on this board, and out of all the people who post regularly, I'd say that was pretty good. Yes, there may be some sarcastic people, some who are "short" with their answers, but only one I'd consider downright rude.

But isn't it a rule that there has to be at least ONE to keep things lively? The only other board I'm on frequently is Australia, and I know we have one there (LoveItaly can prolly guess)

Now, let's all join hands in a rousing chorus of "Kumbaya".

StikkyB:

"I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Voltaire

(or maybe not Voltaire)

That's my philosophy. Basically, you can say whatever you like about this forum; whatever it was meant to be, it has certainly become a very interesting topic, as witness the number of responses it has generated.

I'll agree with you that some people are perpetual provocateurs - these probably average less than 1%. Others are probably just tired of hearing the same question asked over and over and over again and try to be brave by giving an unconventional response that may come across as sarcastic, rude, etc. However, the good humor and the marvellous sense of community far outweigh the negatives on this forum.

I would ask you to come back, whether you are a one-time poster or have posted under several names. Do not give up the ocean of good just because of a few drops of bad.

Debate is good for all of us.

Live up to your name: "stick" with us! You have much to contribute too!

Please tell me you can tell the DIFFERENCE between what I'm doing right now and writing a 500 word post all in caps! Please tell me you can tell the difference!! Eldon, you cannot possibly be that ignorant.

And for the record if you go back and review the thread you're talking about, I never said anything to that poster about doing all caps. What happened was another poster brought it up, totally politely and explaining why it is easier to read and that some people consider it shouting. He ended his kind suggestion with another nicety. Then HE was attacked (see I do sometimes capitalize single words that NEED shouting) for being rude. This is the kind of silliness some of us here are talking about with these accusations of rude. Why is trying to help and kindly suggest to new posters considered rude? I only posted onto that thread in defense of the poster who was being attacked with rude comments. Finally it became clear that the reason he was being attacked was not because of what he said but rather because of WHO he was, someone that lots of posters love to slam. So please, eldon, if you want to be rude to me, at least get your facts straight first.

And about my being annoyed 99.9% of the time. Please read the last two hundred or so of my posts and count the number where I've been annoyed. Meanwhile let's count your 6 or 7 posts you've done since you registered to make nasty comments. Only two were anything other than making rude comments like the one above.

Sorry, I will not discuss rudeness with you eldon. It just doesn't make sense to argue the point with someone who registered a particular name clearly for the primary purpose of being rude to posters.

Just how many cats does one have to live with in order to join the "inner circle"?

Plus, I weigh less than 350 pounds, so does that count against me?

Oh, and I don't get summers off (since I'm not a teacher), so I can't sit inside all day and watch this screen and slap the little hands of someone who misspells a word, or doesn't use the proper grammer (ooops, grammar)...

Patrick, your definition of 'rudeness' is a bit different than what's typical. Otherwise, I doubt there would be quite a few members who would have commented that you're rude. Let's just say you're very blunt in your replies. That's just uniquely you, but it doesn't make it acceptable. Your turn...

I find that the very few I spar with on this board usually end up being some of my favorite posters...there's a reason why the word "smart" is in "smartass".

Once I realized that NYTravel/Food Snob could see right through my bad fashion sense, I realized we were living on different planets, and therefore I don't bother to argue the finer points (or even the general ones) of Prada and Louis Vuitton with her. I hope I spelled those right. I shop on a budget too small to be able to win any argument that doesn't win it by saying "But I got it on sale at Ross".

But one of my fave posters here is Robespierre, whose name is that of a man during the French Revolution who oversaw The Terror. Once I realized that, I decided he'd probably find out where I live and kill my cats. Made note to self: Make Nice With Robespierre.

Then there's Ira. There isn't a New Yorker named Ira I haven't met that I didn't like. He's about the most valued person to me on this board because he doesn't do anything except help people out, and his oneliners are priceless, and the lightbulb logo helps me find his posts.

Patrick, face it...you're not having fun til you're arguing the finer points of practically anything you can find that might be potentially contentious. We're not all peacemakers in this world. I'm not either. Get over it, it's ok.

The one thing I like about this board is that I can learn so much more about where I'm going next by picking the experiences of others, even (and especially) if they're different from what I would do on my own.

My family thinks I'm a genius because of all the information I've gotten from this board in advance of our trip to Paris. Rude or not, what I get here is invaluable.

Happy Travels (Still mean it)

Jules

These last few posts are gems. What a way to prove my point.

StikkyB's work is done here.

Stikky -- According to my Lutheran upbringing, your work is only done once you're dead.

Thanks for the laugh today.

And just for the record, that was a Christian work ethic joke, not a threat against anyone's life.

"assassin" - derived from the Arabic "hashshashin" - one who smokes hashish; also name of a murderous band of hashish smokers who had an impregnable fortress (now I forget, at the south end of either the Caspian Sea or the Black Sea) from which they sallied forth - much under the influence of hashish to (what else?) commit murderous raids. Finally destroyed c. 13th century by the Mongols.

Thus, technically, only Moslems who smoke hashish and commit murder are assassins. Christians who smoke God-knows-what and engage in character-assassination are known as ...?

Sorry, I know this is completely off point. This thread is rapidly going downhill. Just my miserable attempt to salvage this hapless thread. Stikky, you are "stuck" on one thought please stop being human and trying to bolster your own point of view with more "see what I mean" posts. We all see what you mean, but do you see that many disagree with you?

Me? My only excuse is that I've had one Pinot Blanc from Alsace too many.

As you might sense, some of these posting "relationships" go a long way back. Some people seem to enjoy giving each other a hard time. On a few occasions, people have even tried messing with me - and I think I'm really unassuming on here! It just ads to the overall "interest" of the site, when there are these anonymous posters who have little conversations among themselves. If you start to get annoyed by the windbags, just keep scrolling... ! Welcome aboard. Just watch, because now you're fair game...! !!!
