which of these overnite positano/sorrento/capri plans makes more sense?

i will be staying at a villa near perugia, and i want to revisit amalfi coast area. however, i only have 1 1/2 days. i have two plans-- train to naples, circumvesuviana to sorrento.then ferry over to capri and spend some time then sleep over in sorrento and next day, take bus or taxi to positano and go along the coast. or, naples to positano, see the coast and then somehow go visit capri, but stay over in positano. i am going in oct. and i know ferries dont always run from positano to capri then. i just dont know which would be more convenient-- positano or sorrento. i am thinking that sorrento is-- what do you think??

Sorrento is probably the more convenient. I visited Positano by ferry from Sorrento but Sorrento has ferrys runing to Capri more frequent. You may find some info on these sites, itwg.com enit.it travel.it
venere.it initaly-com turismotorino.org
or try search engine with sorrento.
Good luck!

ANG - All that in 1.5 days? Wow! It's a long ride from Perugia, so you'll need to make an early start. For timetables go to:
www.trenitalia.it

I think Sorrento's probably better too. But you can cut travelling time by taking a hydrofoil direct from Naples to Capri rather than Circumves & ferry via Sorrento. You can find timetables here:

http://www.capri.net/home/en/transport.php

Hope this helps ...

thanks for comments and yes i know that it is not alot of time, but iwas thinking of an early train from perugia to naples( isnt it about 4 hours??)and then kind of quick sightseeing. i have actually been to all of the places before, but i just want to see them again.when i was there before, i was a student, and i dont think i spent alot of time-- just enough to whet my appetite. Steve-- if i took the hydrofoil from naples to capri, i could spend some time and then on the return boat ride, go to sorrento and check in the hotel?? i wouldnt have to go back to naples-- right? i would just buy one way hydrofoil tickets.

Ang,

I'm pretty sure you can buy one way tickets on the hydrofoils. Just so you know, the hydrofoil time from Capri to Naples is 45 minutes, and from Capri to Sorrento it's 20 minutes.

Sorrento would be a better (although less beautiful) choice for you. Too, you can't always count on getting over to Capri from Positano. Sometimes the water conditions aren't right, other times it's a scheduling issue, so yes, you're better off basing in Sorrento if you need to get to Capri.

It does sound like a lot of traveling to do in a small amount of time, but you only live once! Enjoy it!

ANG - The fastest journey time to Naples is 4 hours 40' - but some trains take well over 5 hours. Check www.trenitalia.it for details.

Yes, you can just get one-way hydrofoil tickets Naples-Capri (departs from Molo Beverello) then Capri-Sorrento.
Check the last sailing Capri-Sorrento (-they don't run late). It's currently 18.15.

You can find all Capri timetables on:
http://www.capri.net/home/en/transport.php

Hope this helps ...
