Which is the best Scandinavian Capital for a May vacation? Why?

Which is the best Scandinavian Capital for a May vacation? Copenhagen? Oslo? or Stockholm?

Just a thought, but Copenhagen is a little bit further south than the other two, and May is still a little early. Was there in late May a year ago -- during trip from Copenhagen to Stockholm went through snow squalls.

But are you more concerned with comparative attractions of the cities or the time of year?

I prefer Copenhagen over Stockholm for some inexplicably personal reasons (don't know Oslo) -- its scale, its people, etc. -- but in someways there is more to see and do in Stockholm. How long do you have for this vacation -- too short to do more than one city?

I am a huge fan (6'3", 240lbs) of Copenhagen and the surrounding area. Kronberg Castle and Fredericksberg Castle are two of my favorites in Europe. Downtown Copenhagen (the old city) has more "Old Europe" atmosphere cubic meter for cubic meter than most other cities in Europe.

May can be a little cool, but Oslo and Stockholm will be cooler.

If you are staying in Scandinavia 17 May I would have considered to stay in Oslo. 17 May the Norwegians are celebrating their national day. It's well worth the visit. I live in Scandinavia and don't think there will be much differences in temperature between the capitals in May.

Hi! Why not try Bergen in Norway! It is in the most beautiful part of Norway (Western) - with mountains and fjord - can't be compared to Oslo or the beauty of the other Scandinavian capitals. The train ride from Oslo to Bergen is ranked as one of the most beautiful in the world. If you go that direction, a MUST is the "Norway in a nutshell trip" combining train and boat. Don't miss 17th of May(Norway's national day)! It can't be compared to 4th of July!
I visited all 3 of the cities in June 2000. Admittedly, the later in June you go, the better the weather, but I can tell you that Stockholm is worthy of your consideration.

Both my wife and I enjoyed Copenhagen and Stockholm a bit more than Oslo, and for most of the trip couldn't make up our "collective mind" which of the two we really liked better. Both are very beautiful cities with loads of charm, and I'd go back to either in a heartbeat....

After we returned, tho, it occured to us that one thing is VERY different about Stockholm and that's the fact that its got water everywhere!! Lots of little bridges, beautiful views, boats all around.....
I think that if I had to pick only one city to re-visit, I'd choose Stockholm for that reason alone.

In any event, you really can't go wrong with either choice!! Best wishes for a great trip! Dave

Having been to all three in May, (and Copenhagen in November once. bad idea...) I'd say that Copenhagen just offers more, period.

In my opinion its much more walkable city with better food, more drink, and more attitude than either Oslo or Stockholm.

The temperature in Copenhagen will range from the upper 40s at night to the mid to upper 60s during the day. It can be very pleasant on a sunny day there . . . on the other hand, a rainy evening there can test a traveller's will to site-see . . . You'll find that Oslo and Stockholm are slightly cooler on average.

All three are great places. But the last time I was in Oslo it was the most expensive. I would pick Copenhagen.

When I was in Copenhagen in late May the weather was so beautiful I spent one day lying on the beach north of the city. It was also great for biking, in a place where there are amazing numbers of cyclists. And then there was the evening I got out of a cab and forgot that there was a bike path to my immediate right, but more about that later.

It is truly special to be anywhere in Norway on May 17, their National Day. Traditional costumes, parades etc. It is one of my most memrable trips. Go to Oslo, taken the train over to Bergen, eat, and enjoy!

If you are going to be in Scandinavia during May 17th, you should choose Oslo. Take a look at this web page from the main TV-channel in Norway. It contains picture galleries from last years celebration: http://www.nrk.no/programmer/tv_arkiv/17__mai/1859325.html
It's in norwegian, but if you choose the links Biletgalleri: 17. mai 2002 you should be OK.
