Yup, and "Berg" and "Burg" are not pronounced the same, despite the general opinion in the English speaking world - that's why German always go mad at misspellings...

"Bratwurst" = grilled sausage
"Brats" = grilleds - does that make sense?

I see the pun about brats in English. Nevertheless, if you feel you must abbreviate and want to say sausage it has to be "Wurst".
In Nürnberg and Regensburg where they have those tiny sausages it is even easier: you simply order 4 or 6 or 8 auf(on) Kraut, depending on how many you want.

Paul is talking about the Historische Wurstküche by the old bridge, a food place that has been in operation for 850 years (or so they claim). It is a bit touristy but I recommend it. Food is simple but excellent. They charge for the bread but those dark rolls are sooo yummy that they are worth those extra 50 or so cents per piece.

Ingo, I have read your recommendation of the Elbresidenz in Bad Schandau and just booked the Christmas arrangement for our three-generation family. The rates are reasonable indeed.

Thanks to everyone for all of your input...we have a final itinerary!

Fly into Budapest from US...spend the rest of that day and the next two days (3 nights) in Budapest...drive to Prague on day 4, stopping in Cesky Krumlov for the afternoon...spend 2 full days (3 nights) in Prague...drive to Munich on day 7, stopping in Regensburg (or another Bavarian town)..spend 2 days and 3 nights in Munich (including a visit to Dachau) fly back to US from Munich on day 10.

Now I have to find hotels in each of the three cities...of course, suggestions are still appreciated...prefer boutique or chain hotels in the center of town...upscale but not fancy.

You won't have a lot of time to explore Regensburg on your day 7. One more manageable place nearby you might consider stopping is Weltenburg Abbey

Thanks Vttraveler...that looks interesting. Is it on the direct route from Prague to Munich? More so than Regensburg?

Another thought is to see Cesky Krumlov on the way from Prague to Munich instead of on the way from Budapest to Prague and stop in either Lednice or Valtice or go via "The Danube bend," stopping in Szentendre, Visegrad, Ezsterghorn on the way from Budapest to Prague instead. I don't know much about theses places yet, but they have been suggested.

And another thing near to Regensberg of interest is Walhalla, a monument on a mountain top (i believe, never been there but discovered it when researching an article i once wrote about Regensberg) - if driving can easily include:

Rajen--Weltenburg abbey is not on a more direct route Prague to Munich. I was suggesting it both because it is an interesting place to visit and because I thought you would not have much time to explore a small city like Regensburg. Weltenburg is about 30 km southwest of Regensburg. If you went there you could continue southwest toward Ingolstadt and connect to the autobahn toward Munich.
Walhalla mentioned in the last post is 11 km east of Regensburg.

I haven't a clue who Ingo is...but he lives in Dresden and rhkkmk seems to think that it's worthwhile for Americans to visit Dresden to meet with him!

Thanks to everyone for your help...we decided to spend three nights each in Budapest, Prague and Munich, with an afternoon stop in Regensburg, en route from Prague to Munich, to tour and visit with my friend.
