Which city in Provence?
Hello,
We're a young couple looking to visit various parts of Europe in late September or early October. We haven't gotten the whole itinerary figured out yet, but we know that we want to spend 2-3 days in Provence, possibly flying in from Barcelona or Paris and going to Rome or Venice. Any suggestions as to where the most convenient and interesting place would be? Budget's on the low side so we'd be staying in private rooms of hostels or similarly-priced establishments.
Castles, charming little "typically Provence" places welcome, but as we don't have too much time, we'd rather keep checking in/out time and travel time short.
I will be back with a more detailed itinerary later.
Thanks!

About Provence ... "castles" aren't the real feature. Suggest Aix-en-Provence if you want something vital yet very much Provence. Lots of markets and art history too.
If you want the coast and lots of action, try Marseilles.
Suggest you find a central place and just drive out from there - time is too short for checking in and out.
Good luck with your planning.

Do you plan to have a car in Provence? It is certainly the best way to enjoy the countryside. If so, consider a small town for a base. We have stayed in Les Baux and in St. Remy, both easy to drive in and out. If no car, a larger city is better for guides, tours, etc. We likd Avignon.
If you are going from Paris, take the TGV to Avignon and rent a car there.

Thanks for the answers, very interesting places to consider.
No, unfortunately we won't have a car.
I was also thinking maybe Cannes or a place where you can be at the seaside and in the mountains in only a few hours - not sure if Cannes fits that description, but it's certainly something I've always wanted to do. We were considering Nice as a base too but it seems there aren't any direct trains or flights to Venice. Avignon sounds interesting too.
