In addition, there are some who consider Florence and Venice to have some good venues.
Pech Merle, Font de Gaume and Lascaux II are interesting museums of a different sort.
The Schonbrunn Palace isn't bad.
Prague has some interesting places.

Which city has the best museums in europe?
Nice that some people mention New York, Chicago and Washington in the response, obviously these cities have escaped from Bush and decided Europe is a far better place than the US.
Rather than looking at individual museums i have looked at cities in total and think that it is a close call between Madrid and Amsterdam as cities that Den4001 has not yet visited.

Patrick, between the Reichsmuseum and the Reichsmuseum Van Gogh, Amsterdam has to stellar entries. Then there are the sex museums - don't know how they reank in terms of art. On the other hand, art lovers can visit Rembrandthuis, among other relevant sights.

I think the Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, Jan Steen) and Van Gogh Museum are already more than enough to mention Amsterdam, but Amsterdam offers a lot more.
There's the Stedelijk museum (Mondriaan, Picasso, Rietveld) and Rembrandthuis. And the Anne Frank House (I don't see the word "art" in Denise's post) is really impressive. So is the Jewish historical museum.
Tropenmuseum.. Amsterdam historical.. etc.

It depends on what you want to see. What's your interest? Old Masters? Impressionism? Folk Art? Modern? Arts and Crafts? Books? Industry?
For example, if you've got quirky interests in African art and automobiles, then I'd say Brussels for Autoworld and the African museum in Tervuren. If you wanted Baroque art, then the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna is probably your best choice.

I would say Berlin. In sum, 175 museums. Some are unique in the world.
- The Pergamon-Museum with the temple of Pergamon, the Ishtar gate of Babylon and many other great pieces. Certainly in the same league with the British Museum and the Louvre, and the great antique buildings are even superior.
- The Altes Museum with Queen Nefertiti's bust.
- 3 world class museums of art, from medieval art to modern art. A Guggenheim museum.
- The Jewish Museum.
- A Museum of Natural History with the world's largest dinosaur skeleton.
- Several historical museums.
- A world-class museum of technology.
- Lots of museums which are unique: The Checkpoint Charly museum, the Helmut Newton museum, a Gay museum, Topography of Terror...

Oh, I overlooked your question regarding Barcelona. Barcelona has some nice museums, but it certainly provincial compared to Madrid and the other European capital cities.
The best Barcelona museums are the Joan Miro Foundation (Miro was a native from Barcelona), the Naval Museum and the Picasso Museum. 2 hours away is the Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres and the Dali House in Port Lligat near Cadaques.
Another region with an extremely high density of museums, especially of modern art, is the Cote d'Azur.

Well, London has the widest choice of world class museums but you've already been there.
You're gonna love Rome.
If you have any interest at all in Renaissance Art then Florence houses about 90% of it. The Accademia, The Uffizi, The Pitti Palace, The Bargello to name but a few museums the city has to offer. And the churches are packed with the kind of world-class artistic treasures that most museums can only dream of getting their hands on.
Both Amsterdam and Barcelone have some interesting museums, although not the scale of Florence.
