Which city for base on Amalfi Coast????
We have 10 nights to spend in Italy the first of July. We want to explore the Amalfi Coast and go over to Capri for a couple of nights. Where should we base ourselves for our stay??? Our husbands like to be on the water so we'll need a hotel with sea views. We want to take day trips so we don't have to pack and unapck so much.

We stayed in Sorrento and loved it. It was easy to get to Naples and Pompei in one direction and the smaller towns down the coast in the other. And the hydrofiol for Capri left from the dock directly below our hotel. Sorrento itself is also a cute little town - many nice restatuants and shops and walking along the beach after dinner in the evening is lovely.

Sorrento offers the best transportation connections to Pompeii, Capri, and the towns along the Amalfi Coast. However, it's a medium-sized city, and in my humble opinion, not nearly as beautiful or Italian in feel as Positano or (inland) Ravello.

Well I guess city or town is all in the persepctive - I would never consider Sorrento a city of any kind (there's now way it has anywhere near a million people) - to me its a small town (but not a village like Amalfi or Positano) especially since the area you will want to see/stay in is fairlly small and clustered around the harbor.
