The Danube would look much better without the hideous Marriott, so I suppose the "best" view would be from the Marriott itself.

Hahaha! That's an interesting thought! Would you stay there?

The Hilton in the Castle area. Wonderful views of the river.

Without question, (and I've seen them all-those that face the Danube) the wonderful Marriott-one of the best hotels I've stayed in anywhere in the world-everything the room, the food, the drinks, the ambience, and particularly the staff-were first-rate-I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else-particularly with that balcony that looks straight up Gellert Hill, to the Castle and Fisherman's Bastion-the view alone would be worth staying there, even if everything else was sub-par, as it happens, the Budapest Marriott is a great hotel in every way.

The Hilton. This pic is out our window looking north east. Yes, that's the Fisherman's Bastion in the way.

The Hilton and Marriott both have views, but the Hilton is 'Across" on the Pest side, is that right?. Not as much going on there, OR accessibility for "walking the interesting streets".
The Marriott is a wonderful location and lovely hotel. We had lunch there , however stayed at the Taverna Hotel, right on the pedestrian street...but no view of the Danube....if that is your priority.

As my wife said when we were standing in our room & admiring our view from the Hilton:

"This is the view you can never get in Paris."

The view & the view from the free Bastion at night, more than made up for the extra transportation hassle imho.

Yes, but there are no balconies in the rooms at the Hilton, and only the most expensive rooms have the views, whereas virtually all rooms at the Marriott have views of the Danube, and the Castle District, with balconies to boot.

I preferred staying on the Pest side, and the Marriott is very, very nice. Beautiful hotel and good food, too.

The Hilton is on the heights and has great views of the river, bridge, boat traffic and government buildings on the lower side of town. Plus, we found the area to be not so busy - a nice tranquil place to spend the late evenings.

The art'Otel has lovely views of the Danube from the front side of the hotel and lovely views up to the Fisherman's Bastion from the back side. You could probably request a view of the Danube when booking. I know I booked through a bid of priceline and then emailed the hotel and made my request of a "quiet room" which put me on the side facing up the hill to the Bastion. Great hotel and great location.

I started this, and I really appreciate all the different opinions. I have to say, I am very impressed with the Marriott. The views are gorgeous! I suppose when you are inside, you don't notice how hideous the building is. Thank you all for your replies.
