The only Swiss city I've been to is Lucerne - and it was wonderful. We did a Germany/Austria/Switzerland trip - and I thought Switzerland was just wonderful. I don't know anything about Basel...... Lucerne had (probably still does) the longest covered bridge in the world and the buildings are extremely old and absolutely beautiful. On the bridge, they have paintings in the rafters - and they were doing them as the plague was settling over Europe. Very gripping paintings.... People were very friendly, food was wonderful (much better than Germany) - and very clean.

With only a day, I would suggest the area around Lake Constance such as Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein.<BR><BR>http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/guide/northeast/visitingschaffhausen.html<BR>http://www.sitesatlas.com/Places/swiWinterthur.htm

Hi Lissa: Basel is a wonderful city, I have been there three times now and enjoy it more and more each time. Stay in the old Swiss section where you can walk to the pedestrian zone Marketplatz for shopping, browsing, and noshing. Fantastic pastry/chocolate shops everywhere. Check out the City Hall building (really beautiful). It's easy to get around on the trams and there <BR>are many good restaurants in this area. It's clean and safe. Everytime we've been there, we run into some type of impromptu concert, street entertainment, etc. I don't know exactly how to describe the atmosphere, a mix of culture, education, money, tradition, and enjoyment of life.

I live in Basel and think it is a perfect day spot. The oldest bridge over the Rhine is hear, France and Germany both border Basel, good food, lots of old world charm with quaint surrounding villages.<BR><BR>tsuss<BR>
