Where to stay on Naxos, Greece
I'm beginning my search for where to stay on Naxos. Does anyone have recommendations for which city is best for exploring the island, but is also close to restaurants and sights? We'll be traveling September 2007. Also, do you think a car is necessary on Naxos?
Thank you!

If we were to return to Naxos we would rent a car again. The rental of small cars is reasonable and can be arranged thru your hotel. This will enable you to explore the island, the restaurants and the beaches. They will bring the car to your hotel and you can drop it off at the dock when departing.
We stayed at Kavos Hotel at Agios Prokopios in one of their studio suites. We were happy with it. Most accommodations on Naxos are pretty basic and so is Kavos but it does have a beautiful pool, it is located near a very nice beach, and is managed by a very helpful English lady named Barbara. It was also pretty reasonably priced. Oh, I forgot to mention, the sunsets, when we were there in May, were superb.
Another place to check out is the Hotels Galini and Sofia. This is two hotels in the same building. People speak highly of it, but our impression is that the beach near it isn't quite as nice.

Where to stay depends on what kind of travellor you are. If you like beaches and you are looking for a get away from it all vacation then the
Aggia Prokopious area is great. The beaches are very good sand and go on for kilometers and there are small hotels all along the beach. There is a hotel and taverna village at Prokopios but the hotels tend to thin out the further one goes towards Plaka beach.
We prefer to stay in Naxos town where there is lots to do, including shopping and dining, antiquities and just getting lost in the old fortress part of town.
We stay at St George beach which is right in town about a 10 munute walk to the action of the old town and the waterfront tavernas. St George beach is not quite as nice as Prokopios but it has fine white sand is very shallow and is certainly a good beach.
Staying there allows you to explore town in the morning, beach in the afternoon and shop and dine to your hearts content in the evening. Afterwards you will find that your hotel is just far enough away from the action so that it is quiet at night. This is a blessing in Greece where it can be a tad noisy.
Even staying in town you can hop the local bus for about 1.20 euros and take off for a day trip to Prokopios or even better Plaka beach.
We normally stay at Hotel Glaros right on St George Beach. It is a small family run hotel and Alex speaks good English. It is just across the road from
Galini but has a much better ocean view. You should be able to get their basic room for about 40 euros.
If you are looking for a studio we checked out Hotel Spiros last May. It was very nice about 60 meters from the beach and with a pool. It was also about 40 to 50 euros in May/ June.
If you have deep pockets then try Naxos Royal. It is beside Spiros about 30 meters from the beach. It is about as luxurious as you are going to find on Naxos. It was 80 euros in May and jumped to 120 in mid June.
You said you were going to stay three days. You will probably need a car if you stay at Prokopios, but if you stay in town you may well find enough to keep you busy for three days. However if you want a real sense of Greece definately rent a car and explore the interior villages, we have many memories of our days exploring the countryside.
We have extensive pictures of Naxos at www.webshots.com go to community look up a member and type in lollypeter 100. You will see there is lots to do and see in Naxos.

We also stayed at Kavos Hotel and did rent a car. The Kavos was within walking distance to the beach, but about a 10 minute drive into town. The hotel arranged for the rental (about 25 euro a day) and they met us at the ferry when we arrived. I think much of the charm of Naxos is in the interior villages that do require a car to get to.

Stanbr covers all the bases, but let me add a bit. Most of the tourist development on Naxos stretches from Naxos town south past the beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka. The town beach, Agios Georgios (St George) is where many of the hotels are, and is only about 5 min walk from the harbour and kastro where you will find most of the shops and restaurants.
Naxos has an excellent bus system, so whether you stay in town and go to one of the beaches during the day, or vice-versa, it is easy to get around.
Personally I would only hire a car for a day or two if you want to explore the inland villages, or drive over the mountain to Appolon to see the Kouros. I took the bus to Appolon, and was very happy to let someone else do the drving.
