I've appreciated the positive comments about Varenna here. My girlfriend & I are planning on a few days in the Lake Como area and were considering staying in Bellagio, but now we're leaning toward Varenna.

Bob, when you say "I like to think we have graduated from that [budget traveler] status." since, with "we", you seem to be speaking for others, do you feel that everyone over a certain age doesn't care about traveling on a budget, just because you may not?

By the way, the only place I've been in that area was Lugano, for one night and part of a day back in 1987, and I loved it. As you said, it's very charming.

Cathrine: We have stayed at the Milano in late July and with a lake front balcony room have had no difficulty with the lack of air conditioning. The breeze at night made it very comfortable and if we were in the room during the day, we sat on the balcony.

Catherine: Amelia told me that the four lateral rooms are much cooler in the heat of the summer, but they are also much less luminous and have only partial, side views of the lake. The four rooms facing the lake itself have stupendous (unequalled?) views, but you may have to keep the shutters closed in the afternoon, when the sun hits the hotel directly and without mercy (you could sunbathe on the balcony). Since most people go to the Milano for its lakefront rooms (and its homey atmosphere), it almost seems a shame to opt for the lateral ones. I think that 4-5 days may indeed be overkill for Varenna (unless you just want to relax and visit all of the lakeside villas). Lakes Garda and Maggiore also deserve a couple of days.
