Public Transportation in Rome
Hello all,
I am planning a trip to Rome for my honeymoon next month, and will be staying near the Spanish Steps. Is their Metro system as good as the ones in London and Paris? I found that when I was in those cities, it didn't really matter what part of town I stayed in, because I could usually just hop on the Underground or Metro and get to the sites quickly and easily. This is our first trip to Rome, so your advice will be welcome.

Hi Emma,
I found the Roman Metro system logical to follow, easy to use, and very inexpensive. There is a Spanish Steps Metro stop & you will locate it very easily. You can take it to the Vatican, the Colosseum or lots of other locations.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

Nope, the underground in Rome is very limited -- essentially only two lines that intersect near the central train station (Termini). Anytime they consider digging a new line, they encounter antiquities -- modern Rome is built on top of ancient rome (Roma Antica), so there's no place to put a more comprehensive subway system.
I got around on a combination of buses, taxis, and comfy shoes, but you'll be able to use the underground from your location near the Spagna station.

I agree that the metro in Rome is limited, however, the thing about it is that you can hop on at Spagna, and cruise right over to a stop near the Vatican.

I found it very useful when I wanted to spend a day AT the Vatican, instead of walking there. The walking is great, too, but with all the meandering along the way, its very time-consuming.

I, too, will be on my Honeymoon in June. Staying near The Spanish Steps. Lets pray for good weather!

- Alice
