where to stay in sorrento

Hello - I need recommendations for a hotel stay one night in Sorrento. We will be in Positano for most of our trip but want to stay in Sorrento our last night so we can go see Pompeii our last day there and then wake up the next morning to go to Naples Airport. The problem with the hotel in Sorrento we have booked now only lets us check in at 3 pm and that is too late to go to Pompeii. Plus the hotel we are booked in Positano does not have the last night available for us to stay there.

Besides hotel recommendations, do you know the best way to get to Pompeii from Sorrento and if there are any tours we can take?

Please help the newleyweds - thanks!

If you don't need a view, the Antiche Mura is a very nice place with an awesome breakfast.

Just take the circumvesuviana (?) train from sorrento to Pompeii. Be sure to validate your ticket before getting on the train. Have a great time!

Most hotels will not let you check in until 3 or 4 pm but they should be willing to hold your luggage so that you can visit Pompei before checking in.

I am checking availability at the antiche mura, looks like a beautiful hotel.

Do you think it is a good idea to be based at a hotel in Sorrento and then take the train for the day to Pompeii (which we really want to see!) or go directly from Positano and stay at a hotel in Pompeii instead? We only have one day and the next morning we must get to Naples Airport for an airline flight. Opinions?

Forgot to suggest the audio tour for Pompeii - if you prefer tour type exploring, their audio tour in English is quite good. You pick up the headset/thing (it looks like a phone) and a map at the main enterance. The Circumvesuviana is your best bet for transport from Sorrento and/or Pompeii. It's about 3 euro and the trip from Sorrento will take about 20 - 30 minutes.
