Where to stay in Sorrento?
#2
Check out the Hotel Savoia. Nice rooms, reasonably priced, great breakfast included. 3 minutes from the station (stairs), 10 minutes on the flat. Most of Sorrento is near the station, by tourist standards, by the way. Google Earth is your friend.

That's a very low budget - only 60€. You might try a convent.

You also might look at some of these B&B's. Use the map search if you want something close to the train station.

Is there a reason you want to be close to the station?

Because I'm traveling on my own, going to Pompeii and felt it would be easier. do you think that isn't a good choice? is the train station in a bad area or far from other attractions?
thank you for the links. Will wait to see if you reply back before moving forward.

The train station is a very short walk from the main street and is definitely not in a bad area. Actually, I doubt Sorrento has a bad area. I would take a virtual walk in Sorrento using Google Earth, and you will see what I mean.

It's not a bad area, but can be noisy if you stay on the very busy main road (Corso Italia), especially if you stay somewhere budget that might not have AC. Most people prefer to stay towards the pedestrian area. They close Corso Italia to traffic at night/weekends from Piazza Tasso to Via Capo. Most of the area between this part of Corso Italia and the water is always pedestrian (little alleyways with shops/restaurants). The part of Corso Italia towards Sant Agnello (near the train station) does not close.
Many hotels in the hills above Sorrento have cheaper rates (and views!) and offer free shuttles into town. Many are also on public bus routes. I wouldn't rule out staying other areas.
The Sorrento Hotel Mignon is in the center and walkable from the train station. On a little alleyway between the old wall (where the shuttle buses pick up) and the heart of Corso Italia (main street/shopping area).

I paid 50€ for a single at Il Nido (3 star hotel) a few years ago. Great views, big breakfast (included) and free shuttle to and from town. They have washer and dryers if you need to do laundry.

This hostel is behind the train station (also a busy street). I think you can have a single at many regular hotels or one of the many B&B's for just a few euro more.

There are hostels in Positano and Capri, but they aren't really convenient for travel.
I suggest you buy the 3 day Tutta La Regione Campania ArtCard (27€) if you are going to be in the area several days. It covers the transport from Naples to Sorrento/Pompeii/Herculaneum and the buses down the coast to Amalfi/Positano/Salerno, etc. It also includes two free entrances to sites and then discounts after your first two sites. You can use it for Pompeii entrance(normally 11€) and Herculaneum (also 11€). The train from Naples to Sorrento is 4€ so it doesn't take long to get the value of the pass if you are using transport. It includes buses/metro/tram in Naples if you would prefer to visit the archaeology museum there instead of Herculaneum.

Only the 3 day Tutta La Regione includes the transport down the coast. The 7 day does not.
