That's the magic question! Well our entire trip in Italy is for 8 nights... so the cheaper the better, but we are two women, so we want to feel safe and have at least somewhere nice. We will probably only stay in Rome 2 nights, and are looking to spend around $200 USD a night or less... is this possible. (preferrebly less)

I think the Daphne Inn near Piazza Barberini might still be in that price range. We just loved it, and felt very safe and comfortable, and it's only half a block from the Metro and buses and all. Also they give you a cell phone to lose, so you can call them if you get lost or need a restaurant idea, wherever you are. Lovely young people, very helpful.

Hey Lisa
I'm not sure what a double room costs (a single was 115E), but I will recommend Teatro Pace 33. I stayed there on my own in May. It is in the historical center, near everything (right next to Piazza Navona). I always felt safe.

good luck!

Shared bathroom means a bathroom down the hall, not in your room, that others use as well.
I stayed at the Daphne Inn Trevi and really liked it. We had a private bathroom. The only problem I saw: the Trevi has no elevator and is accessed by spiral stair that some might find tricky, so its not the best choice for those with physical difficulties. The Daphne Inn Veneto has an elevator. .

The areas of Rome that are within walking distance of everything are the Fiori District or close to Piazza Navona
It is less expensive to rent an apartment, which you can usually get for 2 or 3 nights. Go to the slowtraveler web site and they have good reviews of places in Rome.

I have stayed at the Valle hotel on a few occassions. Its not the only hotel but have found it to be practical and close to subway, buses and termini station. Funnily enough, when I was there last april, there was a taxi strike on the day of my departure flight, and fortunatley it was an easy enough walk to the termini station from the hotel. Anyway there are lots of other hotels , this being one which should suite your needs.
ps it is not walking distance to Piazza navona

Just to clarify my comments about not being close to Piazza Navona! I am in my 30's (lets say closer to 30 than 40). I have stayed at the Valle Hotel and walked everywhere to all the sites. If you are getting on a bit , then walking everywhere may not be suitable for you. Best to grab a map with distance scale and go from there.

Hi
When are you going? $200 goes alot further in low season. Choose to stay in the Historical Centre. Generally this is the area south of Villa Borghese, East of the Vatican, North of the Colloseum and West of the Termini. Very popular is accommodation near the Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona or Campo di Fiori. There is also Trastevere but this area is not as convenient for sightseeing.

Another vote for Teatro Pace 33 (again, no elevator).
La Rovere is a comfortable walk to a lot of sites of interest (the Vatican chiefly, but also Piazza Navona, the Jewish Ghetto, the Pantheon) but not quite the Spanish Steps or the Forum.
Check out Romeby.com as a website for hotels in Roma, well organzied by neighborhood, as is Venere.com, which includes user reviews.
