Hi Howard, if you are talking about the AngloAmericano in Rome right around the corner from the Piazza Barberini I have stayed there..but it has been awhile since I have so I would hesitate to say how it is now. Some people do not care to stay in that location..but I always have.

I do not know the Zara but it is very close to Termini in a side street just off Via Nazionale - I walked past it! I like this area because it is within walking distance from Trevi and the Spanish steps - and actually from there you can walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navonna area - if you like to walk. Otherwise there are buses to almost every section you would like to go from stops in Via Nazionale, and for the rest you are only 5 minutes from Termini.

Howard,
The Spanish Steps and the Termini station are not in the central area.
Many people here prefer the historical center (not to be confused with the less desiable Collosium/Forum area). The historical center , or "Centro Storico" are the areas around Piazza Navona, the Pantheon or Campo dei' Fiori.
Are these two hotels your final choices?
If you want a hotel in the Centro Storico, here are a few to get you started (all in your budget, depending on time of year):

Bless you, bardo1! You've given me some good choices. (Of course, I could curse for making my choice so difficult now!)
Seriously, thank you very much. I did a quick check of your entire list. They all look good, and there are some in our price range.
(PS: When I said "central area," I meant that in a very, very broad context.)
Incidentally, we've eliminated by the Anglo Americano and Zara from our list. Both got very mixed reviews.

Hey, bardo1, I'm glad that I was help to help you out!
We've narrowed down our choices to these four:
*Hotel Pomezia ("between Campo di Fiore and Piazza Navona"
*Residenza Canali ai Coronari (via dei Tre Archi, 13, near Piazza Navona)
*Hotel Rinascimento (via del Pellegrino, "located in the historical renaissance downtown"
*Hotel San Carlo (via delle Carrozze, 93, near Piazza Spagna)
Any advice/opinions, etc.?

THe first three are all within a 5 minute walk from one another. The San Carlo is across town in a very different kind of area.
To put it in the broadest possible terms: the Piazza Spagna area (San Carlo) is more like midtown 5th Ave in NYC while the first three on your new list are more West Village. Of course, Rome is nothing like NYC and it's never accurate to paint with such a broad brush, but this is just to give you a gereral idea.
Anyway, Canali and Rinascimento would be my first two choices. Pomezia is a bare bones hotel more appropriate for those who want a good location at the lowest possible price. There are those who love the Piazza Spagna area, but I'm not one of them. I would cross off the San Carlo.

bardo1, having been to Rome once already, I can relate to your descriptions of the two areas as they compare to New York and put them in proper perspective. Still, your generalizations were helpful.
We are leaning towards the Canali. Interestingly, my research left me with the feeling that the Rinascimento was more basic than the Pomezia, even though the former's price is higher. Maybe it was because the Pomezia's website gave a lot of info about the facility.
Anyway, I've emailed all four for information on availability and confirmation of prices.

Totally agree with bardo, and have rented an apartment on via del Pellegrino: GREAT location!
I'd stay at any of these, and San Carlo would probably be my last choice. But, hey, it's Rome, so how bad could it be? Enjoy your trip and keep us posted. I'm always looking for more reasonably priced hotels in Rome. Where'd you stay last time in you were there? My last hotel in Rome was Albergo Del Senato and it's now out of my price range. Way out.

Leely, thanks for the comments.
Last time, we stayed at the Hotel Rex, which we loved--wonderful staff. We would stay there again but wanted a more convenient location. The Rex as on via Torino, near the termini (the safe side!), Piazza di Republica and via Nazionale.
