Where to stay in Northern Italy - Milan to the Lakes District
I am asking for help in finding accommodation - hotel or apartment- in Northern Italy. This does seem widespread but we are attending a wedding in Greve in Chianti the middle of June (spending a week in an apartment there) and we have 9 days before we fly home from MILAN to fill in. We would like to stay all of this time in one place and relax, swim, walk, as this is the end of our 10 week trip to France, Switzerland and finally Italy. We do not know a lot about this area - have spent time in Belagio and loved it. Maybe the Lakes district or some other area to spend close by to Milan. Put your thinking caps on Fedorites and please let me know your thoughts. If you can recommend a special hotel or apartment, this would be great.

Lake Como would be my first choice, but, I've always wanted to visit this B&B. It's about an hour and a half from Milan.

Sobster - This sounds like the place we would like - we been to Lake Como and Bellagio and this has been my favourite place up to now. Could you give me the Hotel's email address please. We will be coming from Florence but flying out of Milan so this would be convenient for us. Thank you all for your comments. Bob your trip sounded fabulous but my husband will not hire a car overseas - we are from Australia. We have also been to Venice. The last 9 days of our trip we just wanted to relax before coming home. You write a great report. Curlie

I'm not sure that you would want more than 3-4 days there, but we have stayed at the Hotel La Palma at Strèsa and found it a lovely, if quite expensive, hotel. It is well situated on the lake side road and only a 5 minute walk from the centre of town with restaurants, bars, ferry station etc. Be aware that, as with many hotels, they advertise free wireless internet but there is a charge for actually connecting to the web. We had a second level room with a nice balcony looking out over the lake. Here is their web address: http://www.hlapalma.it/en/index2.html
Incidentally we are also Australians and driving was not a problem. Of course it is your choice but you would have a lot more flexibility to visit some lovely mountain scenery with a car. Greg

GregY2-Interesting how diff. people perceive diff. things. We thought La Palma was comparatively "cheap"-esp. for such a nice hotel. Our room overlooked the lake from one of those 2 top levels. Incidentally, Curlie, a very nice excursion from Stresa is to drive up the other side of the lake to Switzerland.

Hi C,
Consider Hotel La Bussola in Orta San Giulio. http://www.orta.net/bussola/inglese1.htm and http://www.tripadvisor.com/ReviewPho....html#18156747

Yes sobster, you are probably right, the price certainly wasn't outrageous. Of the 10 days we spent last year between Aosta, Stresa, and Bellagio, the La Palma was by far the the most expensive hotel that we used and it was more than we would normally spend. We did think it was worthwhile though - it was great to have a panoramic view of the rain. Greg
