where to stay in Mykonos, Greece
i'm planning to go to Mykonos in August...am looking for a really nice place to stay in the heart of the Port area that has air-conditioning, creature comforts and is not too crazy noisey. It would also be great if it wasn't too over the top priced as I plan to settle in and stay for a couple of weeks.
has anyone ever 'day-tripped' off mykonos? where did you go back and forth to and how were the 'connections'?
any great restaurant, cafe, late night place suggestions? shopping?

Hello, a very nice hotel 1km from Mykonos port is Olia. The location is pretty good and I am sure you will like it.

I have never day-tripped to Mykonos, I don't think it is worth going there and not staying even one day to look around, stroll around the narrow streets at hora and take a swim in one of the beaches to say the least. Mykonos is popular for the nightlife so shouldn't you have some time to have a nice drink somewhere? I think you should add at least one night's stay in Mykonos.

One hotel that gets good reports is Rochari. I've never stayed there, but have looked around the lobby and swimming pool area. It's on a hill above town, but only a few minutes from the bus station and Laka district. If Bill Barr sees this post, he will give you some excellent advice.
For day trips, you don't have many options, but there are a few. Obligitory, IMO, unless you have no interest in antiquities, is a visit to Delos. Only 30 minutes by boat from Mykonos, this uninhabited island has one of the best archaeological sites in Greece.
Also easy to visit on a day trip would be Tinos. This island is an intermediate stop on the route between Rafina and Mykonos, and there will be many daily ferries. Other possibilities would be Paros and Naxos, depending upon this year's August ferry timetables. There will probably be morning and afternoon Hellenic Seaways highspeeds to/from those islands in August, but the company hasn't published it's summer schedule yet.

I stayed at the Rochari and loved it. The room is small and basic, but the balcony was very large and had a great view overlooking the town. The staff was fabulous and helpful, and there was even a free shuttle from the airport.

Heimdall and Cheryll have mentioned Hotel Rochari and I endorse what they say about it. It has been my hotel of choice for many years particularly because of the family that operate it.
Be aware though that unlike the other months of the hotel's season, in August most guests are gay and almost all return visitors. That said, it is still a great time to visit the hotel and I love the cosmopolitan feel the place has at that time. I you do decide to go then make your enquiries now!
Another suggestion is their smaller Little Rochari Hotel, a little higher up but with sensational views.
Some others to Google are Hotel Tagoo (not Cavo Tagoo hotel), Leto Hotel, Elena Hotel (a superb small hotel close to Rochari and with lower rates but still family run) and the Carbonaki Hotel. The Leto and Tagoo are both close to the harbour-side, the others are all in or beside the Rochari district which is quiet and a few minutes walk into town.
I also endorse what Don has said about Tinos. It's well worth a visit, only about 45 minutes by ferry. If you can, try and catch a local bus to take you away from the port town. You will then see a real Greek island. Also, Syros should also be considered. Perhaps about 2 hours from Mykonos but so well worth seeing. If another regular here comes along (Gaspard) I am sure he will give you great information about Syros.
