Where to stay in Madrid

I am going on a tour to Madrid in November, and have decided to arrive a day earlier than the rest of the tour. The hotel we're staying at on the first night is outside of the city, so I do not want to stay there on my first night in town. I was wondering where would be a good place to stay for one night that's in a central location in Madrid (close to shopping, sites, restaurants, etc.), that's safe for a single female traveler and reasonably priced.

I just returned from Spain last week and stayed at the Hotel Suecia in Madrid for two nights. I would totally recommend it -- the staff was great (my luggage was lost for two days and they were really helpful in getting it sorted out), location was good and the price reasonable -- 90 Euros plus tax for a double. Hope that helps.<BR>

You did not mention a price range. I stayed for 27 Euros a night in a room with private bath at the Hostal Casanova, Calle Lope de Vega. It is spotless and recently remodelled. The family that runs it does not speak much English, but are friendly. The hotel is quiet and well located, 10 minutes walk to the Prado in one direction and 10 to the Puerto del Sol in the other.

I just looked at the website for the Hotel Green El Prado (www.hotelgreenprado.com) since it was recommended, and the price is E141 for a double. Is that a good price for a 3-star hotel in Madrid?

I don't think that's a good price. I stayed at the Hotel Arosa at the end of last month. It is a 4* just off the Gran Via. My rate from the Best Western site was 67E night including breakfast. Hotel was very convenient and relatively nice.

We stayed at Hotel Carlos V. It's on a pedestrian street, very nice room, great location (catty-corner to the huge dept.store El Corte Ingles....would highly recommend it. Check the Best Western site for this hotel...even though it's on BW site, it's not owned by BW. Have a great time!
