I would add to Gargamel's (good) list: Snow & romantic: Reit im Winkel;I would revise Obsterdorf to "snow and action" (afterall, it used to be called "das suendige Dorf"=the sinful village). Near Oberstdorf are two excellent resorts: "Sonnenalp" and "Allgaeuer Berghof". Look them up on the web. The owner of the Sonnenalp is somehow connected with the Sonnenalp in Vail.
Also, from Oberstdorf you might enjoy day trips into the Kleine Walsertal, a ski-resort valley which is actually an Austrian enclave with many excellent hotels.

Zwiesel, in December, is really out of the way.

You just have to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber and stay in the Burg Hotel.
Absolutely enchanting and magical and most definitely a must see place. The hotel has wonderful rooms and a fantastic breakfast room with wonderful views and a delicious breakfast served by friendly staff

ROTHENBURG.....fantastic at Christmas. We enjoy the MARKUSTURM HOTEL OR THE REICHS KUCHENMEISTER. Have also stayed at the BURG and it is very nice.
