Where to stay around salzburg

We will be staying in or near salzburg for a few days. Can any one reccomend an area to stay in? and any suggested hotels or apartments. We would like to spend a day or 2 in salzburg and then a day or 2 hiking/walking or checking out the area. We will have a car for at least part of the time

We really like St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee--s beautiful setting and good location for day trips. Find the " Salzburgerland" site and navigate from there.

We stayed here jan. 24 2005 for one night. Excellent!! Double is 60 euro, It is in Salzburg but it is on the bus line to downtown. Free covered parking, that was great for us since it snowed so much!

You cannot go wrong staying here, it is absolutely charming. Great breakfast included too.

We stayed in a lovely mountainside ferienwohnung just over the border in Germany. We were halfway (20 minutes to each) between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden: Haus Blum'reit, above the village of Marktschellenberg.

For your hiking/walking, you can't beat that!

I loved the Golden Tulip Hotel Auersperg. They had a parking lot.

Hallstatt gets the most recommendations and while it is lovely, it can be VERY crowded and touristy. We prefer being someplace that is also scenic but with a lot less hubbub. Gruenau is a pretty small town with a lake, cafes, etc., good hiking. It has a very comfortable hotel, the Romantik Almtalhof (http://www.romantikhotels.com/Gruenau/)
Some tourist info on Gruenau can be found in German at http://www.gruenau.ooe.gv.at/ and some photos can be found at http://www.treehousehotel.net/index.html
It was also featured in the spy novel Prelude to Terror.

We will be spending a few days in the Salzburg region at the end of a late summer trip to the Austrial Tirol and Bellagio and will be staying in Werfen, a small town outside of Salzburg. We would have stayed in Gruenau, but my husband wants to see the castle in Werfen (the castle staff will be leading a special hike while we're in the area and we plan to go on that) and we may also do the ice caves.

We also stayed at the Golden Tulip. We had a really low rate BUT it was during renovations (they are complete and we were not bothered by the noise since we were up and out early).

This hotel was great for us because we had a car and the hotel had free parking; it was near the motorway (extremely easy to find) yet very close to the city center; we walked everywhere and left the car parked for our two days.

We did not receive breakfast with our cheap rate so cannot comment. We did enjoy the free internet.

The staff was very courteous and helpful. We would definitely stay there again, especially if we have a car.

We stayed at the Weisses Kreuz right behind the Cathedral in the Altstadt. We enjoyed it because it is family run and very convenient. It would be a great place for the time you are in Salzburg.

You might want to consider Konigsee, Bertschesgaden or Hallstadt for your other days.

We were at the Novotel, and it was fine. Good a/c, which is useful if the weather turns hot and humid; gives you a bolthole.
