I am trying to plan a trip to Santorini very soon, and need ideas of a nice place to stay in walking distance to the beach. ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also would like some tips on anything fun to do while there.

THanks.

Hi Nicole, There are black and red sand beaches on Santorini. However I think you will find that if you stay near a beach, you will miss on THE most remarkable aspect of Santorini which is the spectacular view from the Caldera rim. The beaches are on opposit ends of where the Caldera is. There is a great web site, www.greektravel.com we stayed in a hotel called the Loucas which was wonderful and affordable. The beaches in Santorini are mostly red or black sand.. when we were there there weren't a lot of beachy types, they were mostly to be found on Mykonos. Good luck!

On my trip to Santorini this year I'm splitting my time between Perissia which is one of the black sand beaches and Oia. In Perissia the Veggera is a very nice hotel right on the beach with a really nice pool and pool bar.

The thing about Santorini is that the nicest part is overlooking the caldera (which has sheer cliffs down to the sea) and not on the far coast, where there are some (overcrowded) beaches.

For things to do, have a look at:

http://www.i-escape.com/Greece.php

and click on Cyclades / Santorini.
We stayed at Volcano Villas and loved it; really nice people, HUGE apt, pool with view of caldera, and cheaper than most other places I looked at. It's in Oia. Nice restaurant with live music right across the street, called Santorini Mou. Recommend VV.
