Tell her to find her nearest Pound shop. They're all over the UK and, as the name suggest, everything costs £1. Bet she'll come out with more than a fan and coathangers though ;-)

...and there is an argos in lewisham town centre.

as mentioned, the small discount stores like pound stretcher, etc (there are many) are great for bits and pieces that she might need to settle into her place. things like hangers, kitchen gadgets, small tools, hooks, etc are a fraction of the cost as compared to a "real" store.

Yep - the pound Store - sort of like Dollar Tree or 99cent Stores in the States.

Lots os supermatkets also have some of the things she may end up needing

Could I suggest that she asks fellow-students? If she really feels she has to call home for advice on something like this, she needs to make sure she's getting support from the college in plugging into all the student social networks - and I'm sure Goldsmiths has more than adequate student support services to help her do so.

In Lewisham there is a street market everyday near the town centre where she might be able to find these things for cheap.

no, this isn't a joke or hoax. she has tried to ask several people w/in her building and even the people responsible for organizing her trip and she has not received good answers from them. the pound store near her apartment does not have fan nor the clothes hangers. however, she will continue to look further. but i thank all those who did reply. it is greatly appreciated

alicelouise,

What sort of fan? If you mean an electric one there are usually plenty of 9" (often clip-on shelf and very useful) and 12" ones around in the summer. In addition to places like Argos it is worth trying local office supply shops as well as stores like Comet, Currys and Woolworths. There may be small electrical retailers locally. Modern retail practices mean that a lot of stores only carry certain goods seasonally, so after a cool summer there may be lots of fans being sold off cheap, after a hot one they will be sold out.

Fans - http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...=7&go.y=12

Coathangers - I think her local Tesco would have them; but if not, John Lewis is certain to have them. JL may have fans too, although as others have pointed out it's not the season for them.

Perhaps Oxfam or one of the other resale shops, at least for the fan.

I suggest it won't be warm enough to bother with a fan from now on - will become excess baggage - she may want to look at a space heater instead.
