where to pick up rental car in lake como

Hello all,

We have made plans to go to ravenna for 4 nights and then to Tuscany (castellina) for a week and then on to Venice for 5 days with help from this board.

My question is this:
We will fly into Milan and then train to varenna-should we pick up the car first? Or as I have planned, pick up the car on our last night for the drive to Tuscany.

We were planning on keeping the car until we arrive in Venice and drop off as soon as we get there.
Is Como the best place to pick up the car on our way out of Varenna?
Or should we get it a couple of days early to have for our time in Varenna?

Thanks for any advice!

Actually, I belive that Lecco will be your best bet. The train from Varenna should stop there. But, you can also boat to Como so it may be moot.

Thanks Bob,

Do you think its best to pick up the car on our way out of Varenna? When I was searching for a car on Autoeurope, Como was the only town listed for rental car pick up in the region. I'm not sure if I saw Lecco listed but will go back and look.

And yes, I figuered boating to Como was our only option.
Thanks again for your insight!

Yup, Lecco is listed as a pick up city.
Do you think it will be easier to pick up in Lecco as opposed to boating to Como?

LN - Yup.

Lecco's only a half hour train ride from Varenna.
AVIS is at Via Visconti 72, Lecco

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Steve and everyone else for your replies!

We looked into picking up in Lecco, but they they only have compacts available, so it looks like we will boat down to Como from Varenna and pick up a sedan there.

Can anyone fill me in on what we are looking at to do this?

I assume boat takes us right to Como, we are picking up the car At europcar on viale innocenzo. I was curious if anyone knows where the boat drops you off in reference to where the Europecar office is. Iy looks fairly close to the lake, but not sure of the drop off point.

Thanks again for any replies.

LN - If you cross to Bellagio you can get a fast ferry from there to Como which takes about 45 mins.

For timetables go to:

http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/itali...indicecomo.htm

Europcar is about 1.1 km from the port according to Yellow pages.

Hope this helps ...
