Where to meet in Cortona?

We plan to meet up with friends in Cortona next Saturday. We're unsure of what time we'll be getting there since we'll be coming from the Cinque Terre, our schedule is not firm and we are unfamiliar with the area. We wanted to pick a spot to meet early afternoon and then another for late afternoon in case we miss the first one.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

The lobby of Hotel San Michele is hard to beat--say on each hour.

The piazza straight up from the San Michele is the piazza della repubblica, which is small and you could either sit in the little cafe tables outside or there is a building with a clock (plazzo comunale) with many steps leeding up to it, where you could also sit and people watch for free. I believe that sat mornings is there market day...best restaurant...La Grotta, to die for gnocchi

Two suggestions immediately come to mind - at opposite ends of Via Nazionale, the main shopping thoroughfare in Cortona:
1/ The belvedere at Piazza Garibaldi Giuseppe; marvellous views over the Valdichiana countryside below as far as Lake Trasimeno glittering in the distance to the south.
2/ On the steps of the Palazzo Comunale in the Piazza della Repubblica - a great spot to people watch in the main square the benefit of easy visibility to the later arriving party by dint of the elevated position if you sit on the top steps.

Hope this helps! Have a great trip to Cortona - a wonderful place.

On the top side of piazza della repubblica is a great restaurant, the La Locanda del Loggiato Ristorante. The address is: Piazza di Pescheria 52044 Cortona. My cousin and I sat at one of the outdoor tables overlooking the Piazza della Repubblica. Excellent lunch too!
