Hidden gems in Ascoli Piceno?
I'll be spending two nights there on my upcoming trip. Have read everything I can find online, which isn't much, and in guidebooks, which is even less. Any tips or suggestions on hidden gems or things to do that I might not stumble onto on my own there would be appreciated.

Ascoli Piceno is itself a hidden gem -- if not exactly "hidden" to the Italians, certainly barely known to tourists.
The Hotel Palazzo Guiderrochi has fantastic bargains on rooms during certain days of the week, and it's a fun place to stay.
The jewel of Ascoli Piceno is its uniquely beautiful central piazza, made of marble, where it seems that simply every living soul in Ascoli Piceno gathers every evening at dusk to talk up a storm. You can join them in the middle of the piazza or take a seat at one of the cafes that encircle it and have a drink. Even if you don't chose to drink at Caffe Melitti (and its signature anisette is lethal) you should go in and have a look.
It is worthwhile to bring a flashlight to the grand cathedral because it has worthwhile art, but it's not always adequately lit and there are no coin boxes that enable you to switch on lights. It is enjoyable to stroll about the medieval quarters of the city, which go many centuries.
Ascoli Piceno is so compact you are unlikely to miss anything you should see, especially if you ask at the tourist office (right at the central piazza).
Ascoli Piceno's population derives a great deal of their wealth by being master shoe makers. You might check out the stores.

Its a great place. Be sure to try the olive ascolana. They sell them in one of the piazza's, I think it could be in Piazza Arringo. Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Arringo and Piazza Roma are the main squares, with Piazza Arringo a beautiful piazza but the best is Piazza del Popolo. They have a beautiful Theatre the Ventidio Basso. Everything is in walking distance. heres a website http://www.rinascita.it/rinascita_we...iner_ingl.html
The place is a real trip into the past.
Have a great time and if you have the chance go and see Ascoli play soccer in Serie A.
