Although you may be tempted to eat at one of the places on the Via Veneto outside your hotel, I would advise against it as the food at those places is usually mediocre and overpriced. I like Cantina Cantarini on Piazza Sallustio which is a very short cabride (or you could walk, but with a tired 83 year old, maybe not) away. Giovanni on Via Marche (walkable) is also good.

Closer to your hotel might be San Marco Ristorante on Via Sardegna, 38. It is actually a pizzeria, restaurant, grigleria, wine bar, all in one elegant setting. Only a block away from Veneto.

If not the first night, give Scoglio di Frisio a shot. Excellent sea food. On Via Merulana down the street from Santa Maria Maggiore

With a family of that age range, and considering you may be tired from your trip (I hate fine dining when I'm tired), I'd look for L'Insalata Ricci. It's a very casual, dare a say chain-like, restaurant that you will find full of Italian families. It is very reasonably priced, pretty quick, and the food is very good.

The two locations that I know of are Largo Chiavari 85 (near Campo de Fiori) and Piazza Pasquino 72 (near Pizza Navona).
