Where to go in November

I have never been to Greece, but if you plan on going in November and want to see any of the islands, make sure the ferries are running that time of year. I was in Vienna in December last year and it was just beautiful. Not sure when in Nov. you plan to go, but if later in the month, Vienna's Christmas markets should be up as well as all of the lights. I love Venice as well, but can't speak to what it's like in November. It is a very beautiful city, however, and I would jump at the chance to back again.

We spent 15 days in Greece last year in Nov and loved it. Maybe lucked out, but weather was very nice (light jacket, but not always needed), except for 2 drizzlly days. Less crowded, great rates on hotels. Much of it spent in Athens. We did spend 3 days on Santorini, but flew - definitely off season on the islands, but still thoroughly enjoyed it.

The ferries run all year round in Greece, but for November you would be best off staying in Athens and environs. How long will you be there? I don't think you meant the whole month of November, but if so, there are lots of other places to visit on the mainland.

Ok, definitely NOT Venice. Though beautiful, it's incredibly touristy, expensive, and even during low season, worse than Rome and bearable for about 3 days max...ok, so some people say a week, but I've always been more taken with the region itself. Austria would be my choice as Vienna is so vibrant, and the surrounding area is beautiful, providing opportunities for daytrips, plus it seems much more livable. Honestly, I've never been to Athens, but many Greek friends tell me thought it's lovely, it definitely doesn't have a month's worth or even a week's worth of things to do. Honestly, the weather is more or less the same in all 3 places during November, rainy, with Athens being the warmest choice and Vienna perhaps the coldest. For my money I would honestly pick Rome. November is rainy here too, and low season, but Rome is soooo very vast, with soooo much to do that it would definitely keep you busy, and even afford you chances to take day trips to lovely places like Venice, Firenze, Napoli, etc. Italy is wonderfully compact like that, and Rome a better base. Also, at that time of year, you can find KILLER deals on hotels and apartments alike. A place I know that offers great monthly rates during low season, is professional and has a lovely selection is www.leisureinrome.com, and they're truly worth a look. Otherwise, even though I have no recommendations in Vienna, I would vote for there....though maybe it is colder (again) with less day trip options....hope that helped!

To counter Dobermina above, Venice in November would be lovely. November is past the high tourist season, it is not outrageously expensive, and you could easily spend a week or more there. We spent nine weeks there last Christmas and loved it. Click on my name and you'll find my trip report.

As they already told you, there are other cities in Europe that may be more suitable for that period, like Vienna or Salzburg or Prague . As far as Greece is concerned, it is still nice and relatively warm in November. Moreover, it is not such a touristy period, so the sites will not be crammed with tourists and you will enjoy it more. Better not visit any islands, the ferry connections are not that good and if there is any weather problem, you might not be able to leave the exact daete you wanted. I would recommend you to visit Athens and mainland Greece . It will also be close to Christmas so the city will be all in lights! There are some nice places to go around, like Nafplio, Epidaurus , Delphi , Meteora. For the city of Athens , you can check this online tourist guide to get info on walking paths, museums you can visit etc. http://www.athens-greece.us/acropoli...-nightlife.asp

Hi Norbet, I'm so glad Peter_S_Aus responded to this post as I remember his travel report very well. Like many others, I was checking in each day to see if there was another update!!
Dobermina is very opinionated for somebody who hasn't visited Greece!! I could easily spend a week in Athens - it's fabulous. Elcon and stefge are right though that the Greek Islands are pretty much off the agenda at that time of the year. The Greek mainland is gorgeous though - there is heaps to see and do. If you are interested in Ancient History you should definitely consider it.
Anyway, I haven't been to Vienna so I won't offer an opinion. Rome would also be good - heaps to do and day trips are easy.

Thank you for your responses. That is correct, my travel in November will be for 8 days only, not the month. Have been to Prague, Roma, Moscow, etc... these are the few I have not been to and would like to begin planning my Nov.adventure.
