Where to go from Garmisch?

We are visiting Garmisch and spending the night, and then have the next 3 days, 2 nights to spend elsewhere before heading back to Munich. I would love suggestions regarding where to spend our time. I am traveling with children and my parents. Thanks!

You can do most/many of the things listed above simply by staying in Garmisch and taking day excursions. We always find plenty to do to occupy us for three days and nights in Garmisch and we've probably been there 4 times or more. I'ts a wonderful base for exploring a lovely area. Stay put.

The hotel that we booked only had availability for one night. So, we would need to switch hotels to stay 2 more nights. We have a free place to stay in Augsburg--can we do everything from there, or is it too far? Thanks!

Augsburg is further than Munich from the Garmisch sites detailed in this thread. I'm afraid it is also a city that is difficult to navigate. We actually gave up trying to find a parking place and I've talked with at least one other person who had a similar experience. I'd try to find a second hotel in Garmisch. Grainau, a suburb, has a fair amount of lodging and is only 3 miles or so out of town by car or bus.

Tracy,
How are you traveling? If by car, drop me an Email. I have a number of driving itineraries in southern Bavaria that will expose you to three Bavarian castles, two Baroque churches, thirteen Alpine lakes, a number of charming small villages and an open air Bavarian museum much like America's Williamsburg, featuring crafts, customs and culture.

You might consider staying in Steingaden, not far from Weiskirche, ideal due to its central location for touring. I can refer you to a couple of websites for accommodations there.
I concur with above. Find another place in Garmisch and use that as a base. We enjoy the Hotel Hilleprandt. You may want to try them as they are small and may not be booked.FAX: 011 49 8821 74548. Rooms 1 or 2 both very nice.

If you have to leave Garmisch you may want to drive the Alpine Hwy to Berchtesgaden through Reit Im Winkel. Beautiful drive and Berchtesgaden is a great spot and easy autobahn back to Munich.

The castle route through Reutte to Neuschawanstein and then up to Wies and back through Ettal is another nice round trip out of Garmisch with plenty to see.

We have been to Garmisch probably 10 times in 30 years and never get bored with the area. It deserves more than one day if possible.
