Okay, so being a savvy shopper and having read through all of the above, it seems that the smart shoppers will 1) buy on Ebay right now (search word campers) or 2) wait until they go to Paris, then proceed to La Samaritaine (directly across from Pont Neuf bridge) and buy them on sale!

They looked really comfortable. I preferred the monotones. They seem to be just a cut above sneakers.

Hey, you, Saucony white sneakers person! Wear those sneakers. You'll be sorry if you don't. It really is not the least bit important what you have on your feet.

I believe these bowling shoes are hardly a fashion classic, so buy them knowing they'll be "out" soon. Like those pants that show your ankles (capris or crops, or whatever we decided they were called), they will help our Grandchildren dress for their 2000-2010 theme costume-parties.

I can almost visualize the girl's costume: a skin-tight spaghetti strap tank top that shows tummy, bra straps, and belly button ring; capris; bowling shoes. And, the peasant look is coming back....There will be choices!

For boys, I think we still have the baggy pants that show plumbers butt. Those have got to be the best. Maybe a dog collar or two.

And we're only at the beginning of the decade! What luck for our Grandkids!

So why not want to look stylish? I like to buy new items and wear them while they are in style. Is that so wrong? It is fun and it makes dressing fun. I am not a youngster, and don't dress like one but I do like what is in style. And I do live near Beverly Hills, is that why?

Don't know if you meant shopping before your trip OR where you're located... but I was shopping this weekend for walking shoes for my upcoming Europe trip. There were TONS of those bowling-style shoes at all the major department stores (I'm west coast USA so Nordstrom, The Bon Marche, etc.).

What is wrong with you people? If his daughter wants a pair and he wants to buy them, let her get them. Who cares what you think about whether they're in style? He asked where to look for them, not whether you think he should get them or whether they're cool. Hell, if they live in the sticks, almost anything from Europe is going to seem cool to her peers.

I Am

Okay everyone, you heard it from "I Am", no more wandering off the point. Stay focused people and keep your opinions limited to the initial question. Yeah....right!

I bought a red pair of Mephisto bowling shoes last year on Rue Cler. I love wearing them and they are SO comfortable and fun, too!! They cost under $100. We were just in Paris 6 weeks ago and saw many brands, colors and variations in many shoe stores. I hope your daughter finds a pair that make her happy and she is lucky to have a Dad that wants to indulge her.

Nordstroms,Neimans,Bloomingdales,Saks Fifth Avenur,Campers,Ecco,Nine West, that is just the US stores that carry these "bowling shoes"...then there are the many stores in Italy,London and Paris.
So if a lot of people are wearing them in the streets of these cities, I have seen them in NY and Paris-and they are still in all of those stores, they are not so "out of style" are they?
Sneakers are not out of style are they? People wear them because they are comfortable. So why can another style of shoe not be the same?
Some of you are twisted a little too tight,I think.

I have been amazed at what a wide range of emotions this innocent post has stirred up. Thank goodness we aren't face to face, I'd be afraid!

I have enjoyed the rude responses & appreciated the helpful ones. My daughter is not a Brittney Spears type. You might see her in a spike dog collar for shock effect. It amuses her to see how quick people are to judge by appearance. She is an honor student that dresses in her own style. One day it might be pin stripes & a pocket watch & the next jeans & a t-shirt. I think she will enjoy Paris because of the differences in style.

I asked about the bowling shoes because I realize that european fashions are different from ours. She is willing to spend her money to buy them and if they are comfortable then I am even happier. I asked where to look for them to save my feet hours of needless searching. I figure if I can find them right away then she owes me & I can sightsee with a happy kid.

This forum is very much needed. It helps new travelers with advice & provides the jaded ones with a laugh... and it's free!! Sounds like everyone wins!

Thanks again & I will eat some pasteries in memory of this group.
